It looks like you put the bagel in and you use a knife to go through the two long openings on the side while cutting through the bagel.
The hardest thing about bagel cutting is holding it in place while you cut through it. It seems that this bagel slicer holds the bagel for you upright
while you cut through it and the side openings.
