Hello from an Ohio newbie!

Hi!

I haven't joined a forum in a long time, but I'm happy to have found you. I'm 53, work full time, and have a rambunctious but adorable German Shepherd/Norwegian Elkhound rescue named Riley.

I've had a rough couple years. I spend several years taking care of my Mom til she passed away. Then I had to put down my 15 year old German Shepherd/Chow. I had to change jobs after 13 years (company got bought out and all employees let go) and then lost my sweet horse (had him 22 years), had to put him down on New Years Eve. So just trying to deal with it all, move ahead, redirect myself, and find new things to do and try to find some peace. Hopefully life will settle down for a bit now! :) Hope to make some friends here.

I'm a nature lover, I love dogs and horses, and I like fleamarkets, quilting, camping, and gardening.

RadishRose, your dog sounds adorable. What's his/her name? I think pets make great companions.

Welcome, Kate from the forum "Rocker".

Do have a question for you.........how do you handle the winters in Ohio?

moviequeen1, sorry you can't have pets in your apartment building. :( I love having my pup around.

ClassicRockr, this winter has been pretty cold, but not too much snow. When I had my horse, I would trudge out to the barn in the dark and cold before work and after work to care for him. Didn't mind...I loved him so... But...the older I get the sooner I get tired of being cold. LOL By mid-January I wish it was spring already. Today is March 20 and it feels about 20 degrees with the wind. I love those quiet peaceful snows, when it just falls quietly and kind of shuts out the rest of the world, and it's so pretty covering the trees and fence with a pretty white. It's those 30-40 mph wind driven snows I can do without. LOL How's the weather in Florida? I hear it's humid down there.

First, reason I was asking about your winter weather is because we are making plans on moving out of northeastern Florida (Jacksonville) and go back to (most likely) Colorado. Been here in Florida since Jan 2009. Thought we love it here, and we did at first, but not any more. It does get very humid here and we've been thru two Tropical Storms and two hurricanes (Mathews and Irma). Irma really done some damage to the area. We lived in central Colorado, 28 miles south of Denver, for 5 1/2 years, and have come to really, really miss it. Don't miss the winters, but "winter" is just part of living there. Taking a week vacation this summer and flying to Colorado and checking out the small city we are thinking of moving to. "Small city" meaning about 80,000 population, compared to 931,000 where we are and 1.5 million in the entire area. During our visit, we will be doing some things we really miss, like going to a rodeo in Wyoming.

As far as your horse goes, I've owned two Quarter Horses and was a member of AQHA for awhile. One of mine was a Red Roan. Both were used for rodeo/Team Roping. Boy, those were "the good old days"! Heck, I still have a couple of ropes I used.

I've been to Colorado, and Wyoming and Montana back when I was a kid. I remember walking across the suspension bridge at Royal Gorge, and going to Rocky Mtn Natl Park. We camped a lot when I was young, and I have relatives in South Dakota and Washington. The mountains are so beautiful. Here in Ohio the winters aren't that bad. It's a pretty mild area - something about the Great Lakes.
I love Quarter Horses. The red roan must've been very pretty. Mine was a Standardbred, a retired trotter, bay with black leggings, mane and tail. He was 32. I got him right off the track, he was 11. He was actually mistaken for a Quarter Horse a few times, as he didn't have the roman nose that a lot of Standardbreds have. He was well filled out, a very pretty boy. And a sweet disposition.

Stumbled across this forum while looking for something else. My primary objective is to somehow evaluate where I am at in comparison to others. Understandably all of our situations are different. However, I have no one with whom to discuss such things. OH! I do have a new adopted probably Border Collie; but, he is only about 4 months old and absolutely NO help - Yet! I live alone in rural WV. I've been here ~ 1.5 years and own the place. Income is only from S.S. Good health altho' dental bills are beginning to hurt. Decent savings. NO debt!

So many are suffering more than I ever have!
