Was Your Grandmothers Cooking/Baking Better Than Your Mothers?

I'd say my paternal grandmother and my mother were both good cooks. I never ate a meal made by my maternal grandmother- it was always the aunts over there who cooked.

My mother was an exceptional home cook. Her only fault was that she never shared her secrets with others. When she got old and stopped cooking she threw out her recipes with her handwritten notes in the margins.

My paternal grandmother was an awful cook. My mother told me that it was because she had to feed a large family on a very small income and was used to watering things down, leaving out expensive ingredients to stretch her budget, etc...

My maternal grandmother always took us out to eat or brought us treats from a bakery or candy shop. I don't remember ever eating anything that she actually made herself.

My mom had a career so she had little time or real interest in cooking, but she was a good cook when she tried except she overseasoned food and little kids don't like that because their tastebuds haven't developed yet. Both of my grandmothers were excellent cooks, and my favorite aunt also, and they know how to prepare food that would appeal to children so I always have fond memories of their cooking.

Interesting question tho'...for example, what would your grands say RR, as they're grown ups now......you or their mum ?

LOL, HD. They've already told me, I am the winner and she can't cook. She tries though, sometimes. Does your daughter have a grandmother that cooks? If so, then same question.

No...my mum died before DD was born, but her paternal grandmother who died when DD was 16 was a professional cook, so I think she would have won...although I'm a pretty good cook myself... :D

That's what my mother used to say about my brother's wife when she went for a holiday dinner. "Oh, it was nice! She tries."

My mothers mother was a great cook, baker, butcher, canner (she had a HUGE garden with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, including horseradish!) and even made some candy.
My fathers mother was a fair cook - there were a couple dishes that were pretty good.
My mother was just about right in the middle.

My mother was a superb cook. While many relatives were very good cooks/bakers, my mom was better than all of them combined. Makes me hungry just to think of her cooking - almost always from scratch. It's a shame she never did it professionally.

Both of my grandmothers were fantastic cooks, each in their own way. One grandmother was a "country cook" who made comfort food. I believe her food could stop wars.....everyone would be too full to fight. The other one was a "fancy cook" who could make things that were both delicious and beautiful.

My mother is an excellent cook, but she is a "utilitarian cook" as am I. She likes to cook; I cook because I have to.
