New way of educating our youth

Yes, we always had "trade schools" but I think in recent years the focus seems to be more about college prep rather than life skills prep. Some kids come out of school knowing all about tech stuff, but not about When I was a kid, my dad made sure I knew how to check things under the hood. And to change a tire. I did not have to learn to fix everything..but at least be able to id, sort of, what that funny noise was coming from. Or when to have oil changed.

Good for your dad. A female friend of my wife's did not pay to least attention to the "check engine" light on her dashboard. One night, while crossing the Oakland Bay bridge, her engine overheated and froze into a solid lump of metal. She didn't know that you are supposed to check the oil level.

Now, if I am not sure about the car's problem, I do go to my husband and ask him what I should tell the service guys when I bring the car in. There is still the tendency to thing that females do not know what they are talking about.

BOCES (board of cooperative education services) was the best thing that ever happened to my son...I'm his sophmore year of high school his learning disability seemed to become worse, the school counselors,my hubby and I were in complete agreement.
He showed interest and aptitude in auto body repair.
He went from a very mediocre student to every award that they present at graduation in 2000.
He graduated on Saturday, began work on Monday and stayed in that position until 2014,he left to take a position closer to his home and an increase in salary.
He was never "book smart" but he makes an excellent salary, can make a damaged car look like it just rolled out of the showroom and is well-liked and respected by his co-workers and employer.
Not everyone is "book smart" and I am very thankful for the opportunity he was given.

Here in Pennsylvania, we also have had vocational technical schools for several years. Everything from hairdressers, truck drivers, carpenters, plumbers, medical secretary, etc, etc. The list is almost endless. Most of the vocational departments are people that have achieved success in that field and need only to pass their child protection clearances, FBI check and state police check to be qualified to teach, but only the vocation part. The classroom studies must still be conducted by a qualified and state certified classroom instructor with a degree in education.
