(CNN)A 3-year-old boy was found dead in a bus outside his day care in northwest Houston after he was apparently left inside following a field trip as temperatures outside soared to nearly 100 degrees.

The boy was one of 28 students from the "Discovering Me Academy" who were taken by bus Thursday to a nearby park for a field trip earlier in the day, the Harris County sheriff's office said.

Houston police said during a Friday press conference that the children were loaded into the van around 10 a.m. and went to Doss Park. The group returned to the day care between 2 and 2:30 p.m.

School records show the 3-year-old had been listed as accounted for on a list of students, the sheriff's office said. It was only when the boy's father came to pick him up at 6:30 p.m. that officials discovered the boy was still on the bus.

ARRGGGHHHH

Read one report where they go already got cited for not being able to account for the number of kids under their care.

Day care is a huge and growing business. It's not just about adorable cute kids it's about a job for most in the industry. This is why policies and procedures are so crucial for safety. The bus driver mailed it in. Even worse it was 3 hours before it became an urgent situation? Should be a head count at least once an hour especially if they are moved from one area to another.

Poor little guy, no excuse for this! I agree AC, can't imagine the father's emotions when he first realized what happened, once it sank in for the family, I'm sure they were devastated and angry...they have every right to be. :(

.

We are having a heat wave in Texas. While it has not affected Houston as much as other areas of the state,
I question the logic of the field trip and the stupidity of not being able to do a simple head count once they returned.

The sweet little three year old should have been safely at home with his mother. Day care is a very poor substitute.

This kind of thing makes me SO angry. I simply cannot fathom how in the world you can leave a child in the bus -- didn't they ever hear of doing a headcount? You count 'em getting on the bus and getting out of the bus -- EVERY SINGLE TIME! Simple common sense. I marvel at the stupidity of people sometimes. There is no excuse for a thing like this happening.

I do not understand this either. You have a list of students going on the field trip. You check their name when they get on and check their name when they get off. When you arrive back at the day care, you walk through the bus to be sure every body is off. With the heat index here in Houston being from 102-107 each day, there is no excuse for this. Somebody should be going to prison after sitting in their car first for 3 hours in 100 degree weather! Its so simple to me!!
