Red Tide

I’ve been very busy this summer, but now I finally have my calendar cleared until the end of October. So, I told my wife let’s go down to Naples in Florida for a week or ten days and I could do some fishing. She asked me if I haven’t been keeping up with the news from down there and I told her that I hadn’t. She then tells me that the Gulf in that area is suffering with Red Tide. No problem, I’ll rent a boat and go out about 25-30 miles and that should be OK. “BUT,” she wants to hang out and lay on the beach. RATS! Plan spoiled.

After reading some news on the internet, I guess there is some Red Tide on the east coast, as well. So now, I told her that I want to go somewhere just to get away for a week or so. She has asked me to give her three choices and she would pick one. I have a really bad feeling about this. Something tells me that I’m going to end up in Las Vegas because she keeps telling me, “Hey, Lionel Richie is in Vegas.” He’s her favorite pop singer.

I guess it could be worse. Donnie Osmond could be there instead and she likes him also.

Red tide has been a big problem in parts of Florida waters this year. I had thought about visiting a friend in south Florida, that part has the blue green algae issue, I thought maybe late summer but changed my mind. If I can't go in the water no point in me visiting when the plan was for beach time. It wasn't the only reason for my change of mind, but, it changed a maybe into a big no go. Plus have other pending plans to visit friends in Dec beach time not being part of the plan.

Sorry you are getting dragged to a Lionel Richie concert, I wouldn't let anyone drag me to see either him or an Osmand perform, though I did like the Marie and Donny O show way back when.

Take her on a cruise, there are lots of beaches in the Caribbean.

No one could convince me to spend anytime in Las Vegas. Mess of gambling opportunities of all kinds just about everywhere you go. My daughter often spent/lost money gambling there, which, of course, ended up in the 'house' coffers. When she miraculously won $26.000, that was the last time she went to Las Vegas. She immediately came home and paid off her household, and so on, bills with it. :)

Smart daughter.

Good idea Manatee.

The news said that this is the worst Algae-Bloom (red tide) they've had from Tampa on down the coast. It's killing dolphins and lots of

other wildlife. Sad.

Sarasota says that if they have one more year of this their housing market will have the best FL real estate deals ever.

Up in the Florida panhandle, they have what is called "June Grass".....I call it Cream of Seaweed Soup.

It's a layer of brownish-green macerated seaweed that covers the water and smells pretty bad. Frankly, it looks like sewage. It won't hurt you, but it's disgusting. Sometimes, you can drive up or down the coast and find somewhere it hasn't come in. Sometimes, it's everywhere.

Red tide, now, CAN hurt you.

It's probably been about 10 years or longer since the last Red Tide hit the Clearwater area. We like going across the Clearwater Sound to a beach called Sand Key. When the last Red Tide was abundant, we saw the workers piling up the dead fish that had washed ashore. The piles were may 20 feet high, maybe more. They used back hoes to stack the dead fish. I also saw a lot of snakes in with the fish, which I never expected to see so many. Although the smell is disgusting, it's also heart-breaking to see what nature can do when something like this happens.

Sarasota is where I moved from to where I am now, but I miss the area, however, the red tide had started becoming a problem even before I left. I do remember the signs going up more and more, about no swimming due to the issue, we still had plenty of good swimming days, but the air did seem quite smelly at times even when there weren't any signs. This was at Siesta Key beach.

The Gulf side of Florida is referred to by phrases like Panhandle because the Gulf side is like a pan that will trap or contain the water. That means unlike having a coast with wide open ocean it could be a longer before water ever moves or dissipate. Florida for years has also had issue with too much fresh water coming out of the Everglades. When fresh and salt water mix especially near or at a beach/coast it's not pretty. Alot of that frequently comes from sugar producers dumping/pumping water.
