Does Your Fridge Make ICE?

Maybe this is an insignificant ‘bells & whistles’ device but I LOVE our ice maker. Since we got this new fridge I drink so much more water. It’s made me realize I’m actually lazier than I thought.

My LG side-by-side fridge/freezer makes beautiful ice cubes (Or crushed ice)

Actually, the ice maker is in the freezer door. There's always ice available. You don't even have to open the door.

You can get both ice and "ice water" . Just push your glass on the lever and out it comes. YAY!

My dog LOVES the fact that we have an icemaker. She likes to have a pile of ice cubes to chew up. If she ever figures out how to push the handle thing to get her own ice, it will be everywhere. She could easily reach it -- she knows how to open doors that have those lever type handles; she just stands up and pulls down and boom, she is in any room she wants. Bonnie is quite the clever girl.

Mine can make both ice and ice water but we have it shut off. We have the stinkiest well water on the planet so it makes stinky ice and ice water. This has been the story of our lives in our last thre homes, with this one being the worst. Maybe next house we`ll get lucky...

Our dogs love the ice maker is an understatement. They expect ice water now and will sit patiently waiting for service but we spoiled them of course and they deserve it.

Our Whirlpool frig has a really good ice maker and we get cold water and ice through the door but I never use the exterior ice dispenser feature because I hate the noise it makes when dispensing the ice........Ive always just opened the freezer door and grabbed the ice out of the ice maker bin.

Before you ask......yes I always try to remember to wash my hands first. :)

Thats really ashame. We have a water softener so had to splice the water pipe so our water isn’t salted but we are on well water. We were told by a well specialist to put a bottle of bleach in our well once a year so we do. We wait for two weeks before drinking it but it seems to help keep our well water fresh.

I'm happy to have my first refrigerator/freezer now that makes ice and dispenses water. At times the auger within the unit fails to kick ice out, or a cube gets stuck in the discharge chute, scaring us when it later thaws enough to kick itself out. Small inconveniences for ice on demand in abundance!

Hummm we’ve never had an ice cube get caught yet.

I use my Mother's recipe and make my own ice cubes from scratch.

I used to have a refrigerator that made ice and it was wonderful when it worked, awful when it malfunctioned.

I doubt that there is a refrigerator with an ice maker in my future at this point but it's not a big problem for me, I really enjoy sock mopping the kitchen floor every time I fill the ice cube trays.

.

I no longer use my ice maker because I no longer like ice in my drinks.
I keep water/juices/cokes in the refrigerator and they get cold enough.
If I order a drink at a restaurant, I order it without ice [ restaurant
ice machines have been known to be unsanitary.]

I've had terrible luck with ice makers as well. No matter which type they are, they never seem to work right. We had a nice GE fridge a few years ago with the ice maker and water dispenser in the door. It worked great for the first few months and then all hell broke loose. Condensation would build up in the ice maker and freeze causing a jam of cubes that would spill into the fridge when we opened the door. I would clean it out and it would work okay for a couple days til the ice built up in the chute again. Then the water dispenser started leaking on it's own and we would wake up to a puddle on the kitchen floor. We bought another fridge with the ice maker inside and the ice bucket underneath, this one makes ice whenever it feels like it, but never when we need it, lol. We keep a bag of ice in the freezer so we know we have ice if we need it.

If they don't clean the ice machine they probably don't clean the soda mix system either, soda guns and dispensers can get pretty gross.

I disconnected the water altogether form the fridge. First the ice cube maker failed. Early one morning, [thankfully I was up] water just started running through the dispenser, turned it off, inside the fridge. , then about six weeks later the line burst just beneath the floor. It was spraying water up into the room dividing wall, & under the carpet. To the point that a puddle formed. Had to call a plumber for that , I told him just disconnect it . I now make ice the old way, and I'm fine with that. The fridge is only about eight years old, and out of warranty. And the damn things are ridiculously expensive. So, i'll keep it till it fails completely.

And if I'm still alive to buy another?....it will not have a water connection at all.

My Whirlpool ice maker broke early on, like a month later, and i never had it fixed because
I prefer to make my own ice cubes in a tray using fresh spring water anyway.

I remember my mother had a big problem with gnats in her
ice maker that would make their way into the glass of water (some alive...gross). It was bizarre and we couldn't figure out how to get rid of them. There was a member here that posted the same problem. I was so surprised to see her post. Didn't think anyone else could have had that same problem.

Btw, my mother was an impeccable house keeper

Yes, my fridge will turn the water in my ice-cube trays into ice. :playful:

But good Keesha, for getting better hydration!

My little 3-year-old great-niece said to me a couple of weeks ago when we were in a store "I need some hydration!" (pointing to a cooler with flavored drinks).

I said, "Well, we'll find a waterfountain."

"NO, I NEED HYDRATION!!!!"

"Water will hydrate you just fine. In fact, water is better for hydration."

"NOOOOOOO......I NEED THAT KIND OF HYDRATION. THE KIND THAT TASTES GOOD!!!!! I NEED HYYYYYYYDRATION!!!"

We went to the waterfountain.

When I was a kid, we got our "hydration" out of the garden hose. You definitely didn't want to come in the house to ask for water. There was always the chance Mom would find something she wanted you to do. Garden hose hydration was good enough for us.

I should add to my response that I have a simple in-freezer icemaker. I do not have the in door ice/water thing as I have known other people with issues with them. I like the fact on mine that I can stop the ice making just by lifting a bar on it. When we do not have guests, I am the only one who uses ice. Hubby rarely wants ice in his drinks.

I have something in common with Goldilocks in that I don't like anything too hot or too cold including drinks and never like ice in them. I've heard that the British don't like their drinks cold either. Anyone know if this is true?
