Anyone Ever Try OTC Weight Loss Products?

Reading in WEB MD magazine in the doctors office the other day I saw an add for a weight loss product and was a little surprised to see it there because I have never heard of one that works. All such add insert the line, "exercise and watch your calories intake while using this product." Well, if you do those two things you won't need the diet product now will you?!

I tried to drink "Slim Fast" chocolate shake meal replacement one time, but it was disgusting. That was many years ago so they might be improved by now.

There is NO pill that can compensate for sitting around on the couch all day, eating snacks. The ONLY proven way to maintain/reduce weight is a good combination of Diet and Exercise....these "weight loss" products do little other than increase corporate profits.

I am with you. I am always after my husband to move more. Especially since he retired. But sensible eating, and not overdoing the bad foods is what counts. I do not go by those OTC meds and suppliments. We both have had issues with weight. But I have lost about 50 pounds and hubby over 100 just with diet changes and exercise.

Well...Don, Falcon & Marie........I disagree. Either ya have a good/active metabolism or ya don't...period.

I have known too many folks that ate like the proverbial horse and never gained an ounce, and folks that watched their diet & exercised constantly and just could not keep the pounds off.

And again there is the George Burns Jack LaLanne...example.

True...everyone is different in how they handle calories, etc. The Trick is to find what works for you, and stick with it. There are a few people with Thyroid issues, etc., that have constant weight problems because of their physical health problems....but the vast majority gain excess weight because they don't take better care of themselves. The One that cracks me up is the Scam called "Diet Soda". Those drinks are chemically made so as to trick the brain into wanting more....and as a result those who drink that Slop are harming themselves more with every can they consume. That, and drinking lots of beer, is a sure recipe for a bulbous belly and behind.
Nearly everyone tends to gain weight as they retire and age, but they have the choice to try to stay fit and trim, or spend their money at the doctors office.

What worked great for me besides cutting carbs and exercising was adding organic coconut oil to my diet. It’s a medium chain fatty acid that helps reduce bad cholesterol as well as cravings. It acts as an natural suppressant and is great for the hair & skin. Look up ‘using coconut oil to help lose weight.’

Very simple CUT OUT THE CARBS.....that will do it. No white stuff in and no extra weight on the body. And move as much as one can.

Everything in moderation. The body needs carbs for fuel. And no one "diet" works for everyone.

World's shortest diet book... "Eat less. Move more. The End."

Wrong, I did that approx two years ago, still sticking to it....still carrying extra weight.

Again, if you have a perfect metabolism , that responds correctly....then ya reap the benefit. Albeit if your metabolism is correct from the start ya need not diet anyway.......genetics.

I get just enuf carbs with the vegetables I eat like in my salad I'm eating now full of veggies. And then the carbs from other sources vs the ones from the bags and boxes.

I agree with the moving and I moved all my life until the OA issues got worse in my body, the saying is true all the exercise and dancing etc..one ends up with more arthritis. That's been so in my life and I stopped the gym in my mid 60's due to nasty knee OA.

So what's left what we put in our mouths.

Yes and we can't blame so much on genetics, but so many do..I blame the OA on genetics too, I believe, mother's side all dealt with OA.

Smaller portions thru the day and drink MORE WATER. Pee it out.

I have 5 bottles in 5 places around my apt and forever sipping. I'm never hungry but need to eat for my health.

Those diet products with Splenda, etc also constrict the blood vessels per my neurologist. He said eat smaller portions of the real things and avoid the diet stuff. He said I need my blood vessels open due to brain aneurysm history. I think everybody needs their vessels open and not clogged.

Yes I agree and that's a major issue with taking antioxidants like Grape Seed Extract and Vit C they do keep vessels thinned. And blood clean and thinned...But those taking pharma blood thinners can't take what I'm talking about....

George Burns didn't need anything to keep his weight down because he had Gracie to keep his metabolism om fire. He also trashed the dangers of smoking did he not?

I never took diet pills, I agree with others here that cutting back on carbs, fats, sweets and moving is the best way to shed the pounds. There's no magic pill, you have to watch your food intake and exercise. I use coconut oil almost every day like Keesha, and it does have good effects for weight loss, but I use it for other benefits like brain health and skin.

I used to take Chitosan years back, still have one in a bottle on my shelf, it expired in 2003. :D It's a shellfish fiber capsule that you take a half hour before eating a fatty meal or dessert. It absorbs some of the fat from the meal, and lets it exit your system instead of staying with you. If you have shellfish allergies, you can't use it. If it's not abused, it isn't harmful. The label says to take 4 caps, and I always took two....using too much is harsh on your digestive system, it's pretty much ground down crab shells, etc. The brand I have is MAX, don't even know if they still sell it. Time to throw this bottle out, taking up space. :p

"He also trashed the dangers of smoking did he not?"

Not sure, but he did smoke Cuban cigars everyday....admitted to about 7-8 p/day.

The thing of it is, there is all this talk about cutting out white bread, white potatoes etc.

Mankind has been eating these things since 'forever'. Why suddenly are they the enemy ? IMO if a persons system / metabolism cannot / does not digest these carbs correctly ? There is a problem....lets find a way to correct the problem ! Not just ignore the food as part of our diets.

The food we eat has been "enhanced" in recent years....especially meat and poultry products. We live in a rural area where there a many poultry and cattle farms. The local producers feed the cattle, chickens and turkeys a steady diet of steroids and growth hormones....so as to increase production and reduce "time to market". These farmers can now have chickens and turkeys ready to be processed in just 3 or 4 months, instead of the 8 to 12 months that would normally be required. I strongly suspect that many of these "additives" remain in the flesh and are passed along to us when we consume the meat. Similar measures are taken on fruits and vegetables, corn, soybeans, and wheat, etc., in the form of fertilizers, and pesticides, etc.,..again, in order to increase production. With an ever increasing population, and increased demand for food at a reasonable price, agriculture has become quite "creative" in its production.

This combination of added chemicals, and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle among our people most certainly adds to the growing epidemic of Obesity we are seeing....IMO. I suppose a person might be better off eating strictly Organic
food...if you can find such, and afford the extra prices, etc. However, for most of us, the Only way to keep the waistline under control is to limit the caloric intake, and adopt a lifestyle that burns the calories we consume.

A friend was close to diabetes and she took control of her life and CUT OUT ALL WHITE foods and took off over 80 lbs in about a year. So it can be done...just because we ate breads and potatoes etc all our lives doesn't mean we were healthy, I ate them too as did parents and weight issues were always there.

And why not ignore those Whites....I don't miss buying and having bread in my house for a moment.

I'm sure MOST thanksgiving dinners had all the whites and then loads of breads and rolls etc.

I ate with 2 friends in a restaurant and thankfully no extra bread except for the dressing was on the table. I would not have touched the bread anyway.

"So it can be done"......I never said it can't, I just said [indicated] that it is not an absolute. And that it shouldn't need to be done. Something is wrong inside the bodies of those that cannot process them properly. My point is, as opposed to turning away from [what was] a good source of food.....Let's push? hope for? finding a reason why some need to, and correct that.

If you can do without those thing in your diet ? That does not mean everyone can. And it doesn't mean they're something less if they cannot.
