Rick's rehab journey . Part---whatever

Rick has been released back to the nursing home. Minus a baby toe, and with the addition of some sort of vacuum pressurized boot on said left foot. It is automatic, and applies and releases pressure to the foot, to improve the circulation. The primary clot they found appears to be gone. This is just to assure that he does not get another.
He will need to keep the boot on and pumping 24/7 for about 5 weeks. So, in the Nursing home he stays until next month some time. I was at the home for a couple hours this afternoon. I left before dark as the weather was not co-operating. After I was home an hour or so he called and said "I do not think they know how to work the boot, I think it is not running. Can you call the hospital?" I said no...if THEY are having issues, THEY need to call the hospital to speak to someone there to get direction. He called back later and said all was well. It was running OK.

Looks like it will be a process Marie, hoping he will be well enough to come home soon, but it's good that he's in the nursing home for now to be observed and cared for by professionals. Glad his boot is working again. Hang in there, hope you're getting some rest and eating well with all that's going on with your hubby.

I am eating any trying to rest. Hanging in there. Had a bad day a couple days ago. So a neighbor came over and we ordering chicken wings and watched a movie. It helped.

Rick's PT and OT has started. They have him sitting up in bed. He has a special Ortho-shoe coming in the next day or two. He will be wearing it during therapy, during his healing, as he needs to put weight on his heal, and have the toes up. This is on the left foot. They did not have any on hand at the Nursing home, so she did an urgent order for one. He won't be able to stand until it comes. He is getting stronger. Yesterday the OT and PT came in back to back. So he had almost two full hours of therapy. He sat up almost entirely on his own, from lying down.
He is still not eating well, so they are giving him some of those nutritional drinks every day, to give him some calories. He needs to drink more too.

Here is a picture of his new fashion footwear. It will just be for the left foot. He will put a slipper on the other. As you see, there is a wedge under the heel, keeping the toes off the ground. Almost looks like something hippies wore back in the 60's.

I hope the shoe does him good Marie, and the therapy gets him well enough to come back home safely. Thanks for letting us know how things are progressing.

So glad to hear some positive news about Rick, Marie. The OT/PT folks will give him goals to work toward (us guys need a challenge).

Keeping him hydrated is really important. Odd, my wife and I were talking about that just this morning. I'm amazed at how long it took us to fully understand the importance of getting enough liquids. When you're not feeling well, being dehydrated can make you feel so much worse.

And please make sure you're taking good care of Marie too! :bigwink:

Have to share an amusing story. Sunday, when his PT was working with Rick, she asked about his nickname "Rocky". His dad started calling him that, and it stuck. Anyway, I mentioned Rocky & Bullwinkle. She got a confused look and said "Who?" She is a 20-something lady. Rick's favorite of all his therapists.

So, I go into the explaination of a flying squirrel, and a Moose that stands on two legs, and the bad guys Boris and Natashia. She just raised an eyebrow. I even used pictures. I guess our age was showing.

Marie, so glad to hear he is coming along.

Liked your Rocky and Bullwinkle story. Once I told my young assistant I would appreciate it if she would tidy up our supply closet because it was in danger of becoming a "Fibber McGee and Molly" closet. I got that same blank look from her. So I spent some time explaining Fibber McGee and Molly and their famous closet and how back at the dawn of time there were stories on the radio, etc. It does make you feel really old.

Really glad to hear ole' Rocky is doing ok!! ;)

5 weeks is a long time for the pressure boot...I assume that means he'll be there for those 5 weeks. Still, it sounds like they're taking care of him. Love the new footwear! ;)

Marie, that's funny about Rocky and Bullwinkle. They were my favorites, too.

Butterfly, I never knew Fibber Mcgee and Molly, but was told about them when my closet was a mess.

Hugs to your Rocky and you!

Actually they took off the vacuum as it was not sealing well. That footwear is just for when he stands. And the I V antibiotic is at least two more weeks
