Functional Medicine more Effective than Conventional Medicine

"Functional medicine is a new way of thinking about disease that gets to the root cause," he explained, "It doesn't focus so much on the symptoms as the question of why you have those symptoms."
Dr. Hyman said like many patients, once Cindy was treated by a functional medicine doctor, she quickly got much better.
"In a very short period of time, she not only lost a lot of weight but was able to end her seizures, to recover her energy, end her brain fog and to be engaged in her life again, which is not only something we see routinely in functional medicine, but often something traditional physicians are surprised at, because these are patients that they've tried for decades to try to help and mitigate symptoms. Well, we don't go for symptoms, we go for causes."

Too much treatment and not enough cures going on today for sure.

I'm really dreading my appt Monday with digestive doctor. I don't agree with the invasive testing so hope that isn't a problem. Nor do I take any medications and they don't like that at all.

I had my first encounter with Functional Medicine MD's vs Conventional MD's about 20 yrs. I had some bad experiences with allopahic aka conventional MD's and had a really bad taste in my mouth for their push of drugs and NOT getting to WHY things are not working right.

The did tests that conventional aka allopathic MD's would have NEVER done...it was truly a lifechanging time when I found these doctors. Many do not accept Medicare and the one I've been seeing for the last 8 yrs or so, does accept Medicare.

I've been doing so much of my healing work that if I had to change I would get labs done only by regular doc and continue with what I do.

I don't buy into all the tests the western medicine world pushes these days, so I just say NO.

I've had 2 mamms in my early 50's and never again. And never a colonoscopy. And work to keep my eyes healthy and free of cataracts...so good there too. I'm not an MD's cash cow. j

That's the fault of the slovenly public. It's not the fault of the conventional docs that we have an obesity epidemic that causes all sorts of health issues. The 'average American' thinks they don't have to eat a proper diet, do any exercise, control their drinking, but can go to the store and get diet pills, supplements and vitamin tablets to take care of everything. Studies show that injuries that require physical therapy have only a 30% rate of participation. That is, on 1/3rd of people who are supposed to be doing PT complete the requirements. That's a big one for me as I know two people who had arm injuries, refused to do the pt, and ended up not having full use of their arm, permanently.
People just don't care about abusing themselves, health-wise.

Many people are asleep and the doc's pill will cure them, and often a doctor COULD shake their patient up by mentioning their weight, but I'd say most do not. They need to keep their sick patients. $$$$$

I've done a lot of research into the medicine/healing techniques of American and Mexicans Indians. I've done so because of my wife who has introduced me to some cures she learned from her mother and others in Mexico where she comes from.

While these forms of healing often depend upon the mind helping in the process, there is an amazing plethora of foods and herbs that do an amazing job in healing the body. I've written a novel about it but don't want to infringe on the rules of the forum. If you want to know more, send me a private message.

As always it depends on the patient. One of my sons was born very premature, he had a grade 4 brain bleed. No amount of "functional medicine" would help him!

He is total care. He is in his thirties. Diapered, unable to feed himself, get a drink, etc. He cannot read which is so sad. He is not mentally retarded, but "slow normal". He has quad CP, a seizure disorder, intestinal problems, and has had cancer. He has no wish to die.

He enjoys his life. He doesn't mind be waited on hand and foot as he knows no difference. Conventional medicine keeps him alive. He now lives in a group home. He goes to sheltered workshop. He like moves, especially Star Trek, Star Wars, ect. Although lately he decided he like mysteries. He wakes up every day with a smile.

Of course, there are many exceptions and conventional medicine is needed.

I'm primarily talking about prevention and managing what good health and years we have left.
