National American Beer Day - October 27th

Not very well acquainted with American beers, but when I was working in Middletown , Rhode Island, I frequented a pub called Codlington Brewery that sold great beer.

    Anything Scottish, just for fun!

Well, VeggieMan, I always thought, going back to it's roots, that many of these 'traditional' dishes were made using very little meat, probably a mutton or lamb bone to provide a stock to which any available vegetable was added. A true 'peasant' dish born out of economic necessity. I think...

Note, there are alternative crossing by boat, but these are somewhat at the mercy of the sea conditions. There have been plans to link some of the smaller islands by road bridges, but as yet nothing has been done. Maybe cost would be too high.

I've been on a tour round the cooperage - it's fascinating to see the skill of the coopers restoring the used sherry and bourbon casks. At home, I have one of these barrels cut in two and used as planters, The smell when I cut the barrel was wonderful.

Terrible weather today. Strong winds and pouring rain. The wind is supposed to ease overnight, but it looks like more rain next week. Went to ALDI and the fishmongers this morning, so it's that good old British classic, Fish and Chips this evening. It's not that cold, but the wind and...

Where I live; Facts, Places, History

The coast round this area was the home to a large number of WW1 and WW2 bases. Aberdeen airport was once RAF Dyce and RAF Banff - at Whitehills was first an advanced training base and later, headquarters of the strike wing that attacked German shipping in the Norwegian fjords. A Bristol...

Wood burners linked to 2,500 deaths a year in the UK

We live in a small village with no mains gas supply. Most people use either oil or LPG for heating and electric for cooking . Oil is expensive, but usually cheaper than LPG and much cheaper than electricity. In the lounge, we have a wood burning stove which is closed to the room, so is only...

Excuse me but what is a blog

I had half a notion what a 'blog' was, but I had often wondered what a 'Peep' or a 'huzz' was.

    Men choose your preferred bedroom…

No, they're all too dull and I prefer a carpet on the floor.

Things your adult child has said or done that bring proud tears to your eyes

No, I don't do 'proud tears', I'm just happy for them.

How many times have you been Baptised? (if at all)

My parents were strict Presbyterian / Church of Scotland people, so I was christened as an infant. Mrs. L's parents were also Presbyterians, but were more relaxed about it. At least we never had things like 'God parents', 'confirmation' or communion which seemed to be too 'papist' for many...

Hi everyone. We're back again from a spell down south helping our elder daughter move to her new home. It's a nice house, although the previous occupants were obviously lacking in DIY skills. Our younger daughter joined us for the weekend and between us got WiFi installed, new 'white...

Who all had had the Shingles vaccine?

The shingles vaccine is offered free to all over 60 here. Both Mrs.L and I have had the 2 part jabs which should offer protection for life . They were the only ones that had unpleasant after effects - pain round the injected area, and feeling slightly unwell.
