    Calling All Cycling Enthusiasts...

I'm envious you're in Ohio. We bike for a couple of weeks every few years out there. You have so many interesting trails, rural and city. We really like the Amish areas and get a kick out of biking past the horse drawn buggies.

    Calling All Cycling Enthusiasts...

Love that trail. We do a couple of 2-week bike trips each year and when we base in St. Louis, we drive out to various points on the Katy and ride up and back. We have lots of trails in Chicago 'burbs, but not as scenic and rural as the Katy.

    I love watching Period Dramas.

Yeah. You can't go wrong with the McGann's or Keeley. A very large percentage of our telly watching are Brit period pieces. We have seen virtually every Masterpiece Theatre production available on pbs in the U.S. dating from the 70's (I think "I Claudius" was the first available here). I don't...

    Compassion for The Homeless

Would not take in but have volunteered for a Chicago-wide organization called PADS --- Public Action to Deliver Shelter. There is a collection of buildings, mostly churches, that allow homeless to stay overnight where they will get meals, a reasonably decent place to sleep, often have shower...

    Thinking Back to High School?

I was a nerd at both studying and music. Hated high school and wish nothing good for many of the supposedly 'cool' kids who looked down on people like myself. Never went to reunion. Hate sports due to not being able to play anything and got looked down because of it. Meanwhile, retired at 57...

Different Generations.. Different lives and worlds..

Having been in the biz a long time ago, I have no idea how we can 'reform' welfare without Orwellian solutions.

Different Generations.. Different lives and worlds..

My first career was as a caseworker for the Illinois Department of Public Aid (a.k.a. "the welfare"). Yes, this was true for us. I worked in the Robert Taylor housing project on the southside of Chicago which at that time (70's), was the largest project in the world. Virtually everyone was on...

Great Britain, UK, England .. wut?!

There is a (I think) Brit term I am not finding the meaning of. Is there a meaning when the name of a place that is follow by the word "Chase"? We have subdevelopments in U.S that use that term, but I can't find a meaning. An example would be Oxford Chase.

I received 2 snail mails about a data breech

Those of us who worked in IT know that many, if not most, data breeches are not reported. There is almost a daily attack on a company demanding ransom to unlock their system. Companies do not want you to know. The absolute takeaway is that there is no such thing as computer security. Yes, by...

    How does AI affect us?

"The development of implants that allow individuals to access AI is a rapidly evolving field. These implants are designed to interface directly with the human brain, using artificial intelligence algorithms to process neural signals and enable enhanced cognitive functions, communication, and...

Great Britain, UK, England .. wut?!

Unless I missed it on a posting, did anyone discuss that one does not take a 'fanny pack' to the UK as we call it in the states? Every annual trip over to the UK I have to drill into the wife that she has to call it a 'waist pack'. If Hollydolly would like to gently explain and doesn't...

    Early retirement pros and cons

"..you just don't go from a 40 hour work week to complete freedom to do what you want..". I did. Retired at 57, 19 years ago. Wife and I could finally take extended trips and be gone for weeks. We also live on a few acres with flower garden, veggie gardens, small orchard, etc. Never had time to...

    Lumber expensive and poor quality

"I dread the process, going through dozens of boards trying to find one that is flat, straight, and few knot holes." Agree. I spend a lot of time going through boards too.
