A young botanist of his age and now often forgotten - accompanied Captain Cook on some of his voyages - early founder of Kew Gardens - and sometimes now forgotten in the mounds of time. New dvd series out and available around the world through different channels etc. Watched the first in Oz last night [he was an aussie] and was mesmerized by what he achieved ; contributed and then became forgotten. See if you can find the series in the attached?

haven't come across that link so far? - do you have a link or more info?
No, not really; it's just that I remember when the movie came out it was mentioned--don't remember by whom, sorry--that that's who that character was based on. I could of course be remembering wrong and maybe it was based on Darwin instead but I think it was Banks.

well you should be able to access the series somewhere in the great unknown world of docos on utubes??

Oh was there a series? I didnt know, I’ve only seen the movie but haven’t read any of the books. (When I still volunteered at the library, we couldn’t keep the books on the shelf they were so popular.)

Life and times of Joseph Banks
(Sir) Joseph Banks was an Englishman and very well connected. He accompanied Lt James Cook on his voyage of discovery in the Pacific and landed in Botany Bay in 1770 where he was fascinated by the native plants, hence the name, Botany Bay.

After returning to England he maintained a keen interest in Australia and the exotic flora and fauna specimens that were shipped back to England.

He did not emigrate to Australia, ever. His family home was Revesby, Lincolnshire but he spent most of his time in London.

In full: Sir Joseph Banks, 1st Baronet
Born: February 13, 1743, London, England
Died: June 19, 1820, Isleworth, London (aged 77)

Keep following the episodes and his history then??

Episode 5: ” Legacy” examines Banks fragmented and sometimes forgotten legacy, and the mystery behind the final resting place of one of the great collectors, influencers and patrons of the Georgian age.

Sir Joseph Banks, naturalist, explorer, collector, patron and President of the Royal Society for more than 40 years was one of Australia’s founding fathers, and among the most outstanding figures of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He rose to lasting renown when, as a young botanist, he accompanied Captain Cook on his circumnavigation and voyage of discovery to The South Seas, and yet a true picture of Banks’s life has never emerged nor an appreciation of his enduring importance.

You need to challenge the series makers not me dow!!

I don't need to do anything. Are you indicating that your link is to a documentary series?

If so, I will try to watch it.

OK I just followed the link but I'm not signing up for the series at nearly A$100.
