How is your balance?

So far so good.
My legs aren't as strong as they used to be, but my balance is pretty good.
Doctors always ask me if I've had any falls, and I tell them I've fallen 5 times since 1979.
2 trips, 2 slips and got knocked off a barstool when a girl butt butted me off my barstool.
I can't remember what age the docs start worrying about falling?

My balance isn’t good with standing on one leg, but I did have very good coordination. I could run forward and backwards without tripping or losing balance. This used to be part of our physical training with the state police, but has been eliminated. Too many people trip themselves when running backwards after running forwards.

We ran forward for a block and then in the same movement without hesitating or stopping change directions and run backwards for one block. Some people can’t even run a block. Not jogging, running at a moderate gait. The secret to doing this is to concentrate what the person running needs to do.

I can’t do this anymore. Since my back surgery in January, I have nerve damage, which prevents me from even walking a block without having pain and the need to sit until the pain goes away.

In physical therapy, they lay a balance ball on the floor that is flat on the side lying on the floor and domed on the top side. It’s the patient’s job to maintain balance while standing on top of the ball. I couldn’t balance more that about 5 seconds on it. Have a look at the picture.

When looking at the picture, balancing looks fairly easy, but keep in mind that the dome is flexible. It’s not a solid dome.

I've definitely lost balance in the last few years, and have become very timid about walking. I see people all around me with canes and walkers, have heard about many falls, and yesterday I fell myself. Fortunately, the worst result was a cut on the lip. But I fell for absolutely no reason, in the food store. Was just walking, unfortunately without a shopping cart, which I didn't think I needed. I obviously did need it for balance, and won't make that mistake again.
