Notes from Pappy's diary

A little something I wrote to my newspaper blog, the Norwich Sun many years ago. It is rather long but for a 16 year old kid, it was one of the best days of my life. Your first car.

I'll never forget mine. The year was 1953 and my Dad had called and wanted me to visit him in Utica. So, I hopped on the New York Central and looked foward to spending a few days with him. After meeting me at the Utica Station, we took off to go down to Pitcher St. where he lived.

As we turned into the driveway, I noticed an old car setting in the lot next to driveway. We got out of his car and he walked over to the ugly green monster. Dad said, "what do you think of her" I said looks ok to me but when did you buy it? His answer was, "uncle Ted gave it to me and I'm giving it to you" After I picked my jaw off the ground, I went over to look at that beautiful car. It was looking better all the time.

Being 16 years old and having my own car was almost unheard of back then. Only the kids with rich parents could afford a car. Suddenly, I was the richest kid in the world. Oh, the car was a 1937 Buick, Special 60, opera coupe. One large bench front seat and 2 little seats in the back that folded down. However, the back was really crowded as there was very little room.

I recently saw this model car sell for over $15,000 on Ebay. Who knew. Anyway, in the trunk was a old coffee pot and a 5 gal. can of oil. I soon found out why.. A trip down West Hill and a few cruises around Norwich took at least a quart of oil. The big straight 8 was a oil eater.

I spent one whole winter painting gangsta white sidewalls on the tires and several coats of wax brought back the original shine. Boy, was I proud of that monster. Driving to school in my junior year was a dream come true.

Time passed and after several transmission replacements, I had to let the ole bus go. Someone on River Rd. bought her and I would see it tooling around town for quite some time.

now that's a real cool lookin dude sorta guy - what woman could resist??

Took all my meds to the VA yesterday to go over meds and doses. Three were found to be the wrong dose and one was questionable. I met with my consultant and my doctor. I was explaining how at times I get so shaky and left hand trembles. Hopefully the meds are doing this as that is the after effects of some of these meds. Came home and Thelma and I went to the Palace Diner for dinner.

Today is pickup grocery day at Shop Rite at 2 pm. Just call them when we get there and bring out our order and load the in my car. There just happens to be a DD coffee shop there too. The wife loves her DD coffee.

I think my daughter and SIL want to go to our local casino Saturday. August was an expensive month but I’ve got a few dollars stashed aside. Enjoy your Thursday.

Daughter and SIL took us out for Italian dinner last night. Have you ever had this soup?
Stracciatella soup is made from a handful of pantry staples: chicken broth, eggs, Parmigiano cheese, and, sometimes, just a whisper of nutmeg. The delicate soup has been a mainstay for generations of Italian children and is equally beloved by their parents, most of whom grew up on it.

What a great tasting soup. Didn’t think I would like it but will be going back for more. Topped off dinner with a chicken dish, broccoli, salad and soda. A long drive to get there but worth it.

Yes, I have had that soup. Very good!

We’ve been looking out dirty windows since we moved here. Ok, today is the day I will clean those windows. Went outside and there was no way to remove the screens. Went back in and tried to figure out how to clean these bad boys. I notice there were two sliding locks on top of each window. It then dawned on me, 💡, I bet they open from inside. Slid the locks and they opened towards me. Made it so easy to clean.

So much different living here as we had to learn how to use the crazy microwave and stove oven setting as well as the thermostat setting. All very modern items. A little too modern for my old brain to figure out sometimes. 🧠

Today has been beautiful weather. We have our front door open and screen up. One little old lady always stops to say hello whenever she sees the door open. I believe she is a widow and very lonely, but Thelma always goes out and talks to her.

Been very quiet around here this week. Been raining steady all day. Yesterday I went up to the VA main clinic audiology dept to see what’s wrong with my hearing aids. Come to find out the left aid is hardly working so they sent it in to be repaired. May take up to three weeks to fix and meanwhile I’m practicing my ‘huh” saying. 🦻

I did pick up an online grocery order this afternoon. I tried their fried 8 piece fried chicken, yuck, too dry and small pieces. Maybe that’s why I’ve never seen any pigeons around there. 😳
Was just going over their receipt and noticed this fee. The bags I understand but a 1 cent online free??
Everything here in NY is so much more expensive IMG_2881.jpegtha it was in Florida except homeowners insurance.

Natl. news is coming on so will close for now…Pappy

Daughter and granddaughter came over this morning and cleaned apartment from top to bottom. A wonderful gesture that Thelma and I appreciate as we aren’t the best cleaners anymore. I vacuum weekly and dust some but it’s hard to stay on top of things anymore.
It’s girls day out so when they finished they all headed to Outback for lunch. I’m here on my own and enjoying my quiet time. Had a salad for lunch and doing some reading. Front door is open and a beautiful day out there.
The new season of Law and Order started last night. Finally one of my favorite shows back on. Looking forward to Landman, King of Tulsa and a few more we like.
Pappy..

Not much going on today. In 15 minutes college football starts so that will take up most of my day.
Helped Thelma get in and out of shower then washed her hair. Emptied the dishwasher hung up a new wreath the kids bought for us yesterday.
Package coming today from Amazon with a lot of canned soups. So much cheaper online. A clothes tree to put at the entrance of our place. New spot to hang those winter coats and hats.
