Walking 3½ miles a day

Don't worry about steps just time which Iv'e had to watch since an injury over a decade ago. Very easy to over or under due physical activity so I walk 2-3 times a day starting with 20 minute morning walk.

Sometimes I can speed up or add a block or two. Also walking keeps things moving other than the entire body. I can only drink larger quantities of water standing up/walking. I could not consume the same amount of water sitting down.

I sit on my butt all day, I get up to go to the bathroom , go to the kitchen for cold water or 7-up. I am 86 next month and if being so sedentary kills me I don't really care. Life is just not worth living, It was until I had to go on oxygen. NO I am not suicidal, I simply will not try to argue with the grim reaper when it comes for me.

DH is in worse shape than I am, thank goodness for our son. I know it sounds like I am miserable, but that is not the case. I am content, I read , watch TV, play with the cat and enjoy meal time, especially when our son cooks which he does once or twice a week. Tonight he made spaghetti and meatballs. He makes really good spaghetti and meatballs!

I work in the office 3 days a week and walk on my lunch hour. I have 3 routes, 3 miles, 4 miles and 5 miles depending on my time and if I have any meetings after lunch.
When I'm at home, I create a 1 hr meeting for myself and hop on the treadmill and jog for 5 miles.
I have always been a big on walking.
When I started my weight loss journey, I was doing Leslie Sansone's Walk Away The Pounds, she has a ton of videos on the Tube.

I still jog, but slowing down. What used to take me 20 minutes, now takes 25 minutes as long as the neighbor’s Doberman leaves me alone. She thinks I’m her play toy and she knows I carry treats. Walking the 2 miles takes my wife and I about 50 minutes.

Years ago, when I lived on the literal edge of town and worked full time, I walked my Rottweiler two miles At 5:30 AM, like clockwork.

once I was able to get my horses back on my own property that all came to a halt because I got plenty of exercise every morning and night, cleaning stalls and feeding the horses. The monitor on my phone always read anywhere between 1.98 miles and 3 miles daily. Along with mucking stalls, heaving manure and bales of hay I was doing OK.

These days my last horse and his borrowed companion, are able to run in/out 24/7 but I still get in about a mile a day, at the barn, one step at a time. My low back is shot all to hael but I still have pretty good upper body strength.

When I lay my last horse to rest and the loaner horse goes home, I will likely finish falling to physical pieces because they are the thread that keeps me going——-1759601756077.png

This NPR story from last month says we need to get in 7000 steps of walking per day for maximum health benefit. A mile is only 2000 steps. I walk 2 miles a day most days and thought that was enough. None of the seniors I know personally have mentioned walking 3½ miles a day.
I used to walk 5 miles a day (2 1/2 in the morning and 2 1/2 in the evening). I was in great shape. I was a little younger too but that's besides the point. I gave it up about 20 years ago because I had a terrifying experience. Someone in a van was up to no good and stopped and followed me slowly as I was walking.
I was walking beside a cornfield with no place to run. I picked up my phone and acted like I was summoning help. Whoever it was didn't want to take any chances and took off when I did that. Had someone else been in the van with the driver, I could have been overpowered. I've rarely walked since and I loved walking. I enjoyed the fresh air and the scenery. It was out in the country. Since then I've just exercised and walked in place. I know I'm too old and out of shape to outrun someone now.

I can only imagine how scary that was for you. I mainly walk inside and have measured inside the house so I know when I've gone a mile. A well meaning member suggested I walk outside. I could, but it's been hot, and I really don't want interaction with neighbors and / or other people who are out walking (we have some who do). I'm fine stopping and talking with people I know if I see them in a store, but when I walk, I want to just walk and be left alone until I'm done.

I live in a subdivision where a lot of people walk. It's a very safe neighborhood. I'm like you, I don't particularly like to exchange niceties while I'm out walking. I just like to walk and enjoy the surroundings. It seems customary out here that you wave when a car goes by or speak if walking past someone. To me that's distracting. I've got to where I will get on You Tube and follow exercises for seniors on it. They are free also. That seems to help a little.

The weather has been unseasonably warm here.
My wife and I went for a stroll up the side of the Humber River to watch the Salmon run, lots of fly fisherman in the water. We did not see any salmon jumping 😕
We ended up walking 5.9 kms
