I was depriving myself of salt.

Yesterday I gave in to a craving and bought a bag of popcorn. All of a sudden I felt so much better. I never added salt to food and avoided salty food. My friends said don't eat canned soup. It has too much salt. When I worked in a lab we provided salt tablets to those who worked outside. That is not me. I did not take into account that I am on a diauretic. I need to replenish my salt! Why did it take me so long to wake up? They said it would retain fluid and make my legs swell. We shall see. But I do feel better.

That is kind of sychronistic with what I did this morning. For about 8 years I haven't ate sugar...at all if possible. This morning I was feeling poorly so I decided to mix a teaspoonful of sugar to my coffee. I am kind of glad it didn't work that well, otherwise I would probably be on my way to gaining 30 lbs. :)

When I was active in the Marines, I spent time in a foreign country and somehow became constipated. When I returned to the states, I immediately went to the BAS or Infirmary. The doctor wanted to give me an enema, but I refused it. He put me on a strong laxative. A day later, I was rushed to the hospital because my blood pressure had dropped way below normal and sped up my heart rate.

They found that the laxatives were loaded with magnesium, which caused my Creatinine (kidneys) to raise above normal. After I was stabilized, I agreed to the enema, which did work. If that hadn’t worked, my next move would have been surgery.

I don’t like salt, but I knew the body needed some, so I would eat something with a small amount of salt on or in it each day.

I watched a true crime show on tv one day that showed a woman giving her small son copious amounts of salt. She ended up killing the child and was arrested. She was diagnosed with having that disease, Munchausen by Proxy.

Depriving your body of salt, causes the muscles to close down. Thus, a full systemic shut down will cause death. Of course using copious amounts of salt is just as dangerous. Cooking with salt, balances the flavor of food. But, one must only use a very moderate amount. Follow recipes from well known chefs for how much to use.

My cardiologist made a statement at my last visit. It went along these lines, don't cut back too much on the salt. Here's the rub, I've never been much of a salt user. Most of the time I leave it out of most recipes. But I will dive into a bag of chips, put salt on my potatoes when I have them. I figure it's my body saying I need it.

I'll tell you a story from my family..

My mothers' younger sister never ate sweets of any kind , she had a savoury tooth rather than a sweet one... and she would eat salt all the time. If she went to the movies.. she took a pack of salt....
As one might expect she died an early death at just 21 when her kidneys packed up... but during the few months she was in hospital before she died.. she grew 6 inches.. Doctors were astonished...

And what did they attribute that to?

We also need iodine which is in iodized salt.
@Babs2u I'm so glad you found salt makes you feel better.
My sister-in-law recently sent me a video about the body needing iodine. I never did watch it, but she’s now taking iodine supplements and thinks they help her sleep better. I personally don’t like messing with supplements and figure I get enough iodine, but who knows. I don’t add much salt to things, but a little bit for sure.

I'm surprised you didn't have adverse affects from depriving your body of salt. Of course, unless you cook from scratch every day, some foods contain salt but don't even taste like it. I'm glad you were able to enjoy that popcorn and had an epiphany about your future sodium allowance.
