At the New Years get together with the family at my daughter’s house, I asked for one using the name I always use….church key.

The entire family ended up in a debate about what it’s actually called because no one knew what I was talking about! I can’t believe in all the years they grew up in my house they never heard me refer to it that way!

What do you call it??

Bottle/Can opener 🙂 I always have one of these! I use it for a lot of things as my hands get weaker. 👍

As an honery teen ager we called them a church key, but it wasn't church doors we were opening.

Church key

an implement with a triangular pointed head at one end for piercing the tops of cans and often with a rounded head at the other end for opening bottles

Term first used in 1951.

I've never in my 67 years heard it called that.

I know that as a can opener. But, it's now solved a mystery from one of my fave Tom Waits songs 'Kentucky Avenue'. The song is about growing up with a friend who was in a wheelchair with Polio. It mentioned having a Church key in your pocket :)

What we called a church key was shaped differently than the can opener shown in the photo in post #1. This is a church key...View attachment 478265
This is for opening paint cans. When I buy paint, they include one of these with the purchase. So I call it a "paint can opener".

Church key. Or bottle opener. I have one that I still use to open cans of evaporated milk.
