What do you call this?

We just called it a can opener. Anything that opened a bottle or can, we referred to it as a can opener, or if my father needed it to open a bottle of beer in the 1950's, then he called it a bottle opener.

Church key. I think it was a very common term in the American South in the 50’s and 60’s but definitely rarely heard now. Screw top bottles and pull tab cans have made the church key obsolete.

At the New Years get together with the family at my daughter’s house, I asked for one using the name I always use….church key.

The entire family ended up in a debate about what it’s actually called because no one knew what I was talking about! I can’t believe in all the years they grew up in my house they never heard me refer to it that way!
