Which state is best to retire in

When you're in your 60s and 70s, it's not that easy to make new friends. You don't have the connections you had through jobs and children. So for me the best place to live is where you have friends and family already. Of course economics and weather are considerations; we like the milder Virginia weather and we don't mind that life is cheaper here in Central Virginia than it was in the New York area.

I've always loved the Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky area of the US. Beautiful scenery that changes with the seasons, moderate weather, mountains and valleys and rivers, and you can easily find areas to live a comfortable rual life. I often think I should relocate to that part of the US.

I heartily endorse the state of Virginia.

I lived in Indiana all of my life until 2019 when I married my husband. When he passed away this past February, I was in a dilemma as to whether to move back to Indiana where most of the people I know lived or stay in South Central Kentucky where I know very few people. After it being almost a year since my husband passed, I think I've pretty much decided to stay in Kentucky. I think Kentucky gets a bad rap. I've found people are the same everywhere. Kentucky is a beautiful state and unless someone's been here, they don't realize how beautiful it is. I think the most beautiful state I've ever been in is North Carolina around the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Agree, it's beautiful. (y)

One nice thing about retirement is you can live anywhere, even if just for a few days. I travel to my hometown where my siblings and friends live, rent an AirBNB and get my fill before heading back to the hills.

I’ve retired to a state of confusion. I would like to move to a lower cost of living area, but it’s hard to pick one. Near my kids would be nice, but they move around too much for me. I have friends in my area, and I don’t look forward to making new ones in a new city.

So, I will remain in a state of confusion. At least that state doesn’t tax me very much.
