After the Bond movies had been out for a while and I was trying to figure out why there was such a hubbub over who played him, I read a couple of the first books, the second of which contained a passage which I think explains a lot of why the Bond character is seemingly so revered (a passage which also explains why I never read any more of the books).
In the passage I'm gonna quote, I'm pretty sure Fleming used the word "girl" rather than "young woman", but oh, well let's give Fleming as much benefit of the doubt as I can stand to give him. And I'm not positive it's an exact quote, but since it really stuck with me, I think I've got it pretty close. Okay, ready? Here goes finally:
"The beautiful young woman woke Bond up several times in the night because she was that desperate to have even more s*x with him."
And there you have it, lol. A lotta people (okay, men, lol) just do not want their fantasies tinkered with; the hero of the story's gotta resemble them and only them.
