What music is your state known for

I'm at the center of bluegrass, but it's not first rate because everyone owns a banjo, and the excellent players move out of state and join with heavy metal and blues groups, where a little top quality blue grass adds to the mix of variety to entertain the city folk. But a constant stream of bluegrass gets pretty redundant.

Jazz, Rock and Philly Soul.

Pennsylvania has produced some of the biggest and most influential names in music. Billie Holiday, Bill Haley & His Comets, Patti LaBelle, Hall & Oates, The Roots, Christina Aguilera, P!nk, and many more – Pennsylvania’s contributions to America’s musical heritage is incalculable.

"New Jersey can thank legends like Frank Sinatra,
Sarah Vaughan, Whitney Houston, Bon Jovi, and Bruce Springsteen for putting it on the musical map, but the state is no less important to music in America today. Home to countless venues, festivals, and events, and teeming with eager talent, New Jersey can boast its musical bona fides for generations to come."

This write up about N.J. is incomplete. Hip Hop has a firm footing here due to Sugar Hill Records (Englewood), co-founded by singer Sylvia Robinson. That label produced The Sugar Hill Gang (Rapper's Delight) and The Message by Grand Master Flash, two of the most influential Hip Hop records that brought the genre to the public's attention. Then we have Queen Latifah, out of East Orange, who got her start as a rapper and Lauryn Hill, rapper and singer who is also considered one of the pioneers of Neo-Soul. She's sold millions of records worldwide.

R & B & Soul: The Shirelles and the very soulful Donald Fagen (who got his start with Steely Dan) were from Passaic, Sammy Turner (Lavender Blue), Jimmy Charles (A Million to One), Dave Prather (Sam & Dave) and Sybil (Don't Make Me Over) were from Paterson. Also, the aforementioned Sylvia Robinson (Pillow Talk). And how could they forget Count Basie (Jazz) from Red Bank?

My state has a couple of things to do with music, depending on location.

In the eastern part of the state you have Memphis, with it's ties to Elvis and early Rock and Roll.
Also, a link to the Blues.

In the middle of the State you have Nashville.
Home to the 'Grand Ole Opry', famous for Country Music.
