Astonishing amount of money in just 2 weeks.. been won by 2 Brits playing the Euro lottery.

It's even more lucrative here than it would be in the US bcause our winners get to keep every penny, no paying taxes on prize winnings here..

We've all heard the argument for or against playing the lottery.. and also everyone who gambles on it when asked ... say they'd give half their winnings to charity .. truth is most people don't...

Do you think that these massive sums should be won by a single ticket holder... or do you think that breaking it down to say 2 or 3 million ( enough to be useful)... would be a much better way to distribute the winnings. For example.. the £111 Million won 2 weeks ago.. if we divided that by 3 we get 37 people who could have had £3 million pounds ...even broken down to a round £5 million that would still be 22 people.... getting a very handsome purse

Having ex, who was a gambling addict, I'm not a fan of lotteries. Some can loose a few $ in a lottery, and that's OK. I can't. It bothers the hell out of me. I know that the higher the prize money, the more people buy tickets. But when the pot is humungous, the winner should get lion's share, it wouldn't hurt to have some other trivial $1,000,000 winners, too.

My first husband was a gambler, it destroyed our marriage and that was Pre Lottery and Scratch card days..so it would be a nightmare to be married to a gambler today even more than then, because now they can gamble on everything online..they don't have to into a betting shop... or a casino..they can do it all with a couple of clicks on their phones... and gambling is conitnually promoted on tv adverts as well... tbh it brings me out in a cold sweat thinking that I dodged a huge bullet, it was bad enough back then when he'd come home from work on pay day with no money because he'd gambled it all on the way home..

That said... I think most people who win the lottery are just fair weather gamblers... ...

What percentage of a huge win like £111 Million would a winner in the USA have to pay in taxes, Chic?

About a third. We have to figure for that when playing but it's only a problem if you win and if you win enough, you can cover it. Our mega millions jackpot is up to $300 million for Friday.
