“Everyone hates me until they need me.” What jobs are the best example of this?

I have totally and completely stolen this question from the thread of a popular news and social media site. But I thought it was such a good convo starter it was needed. I never plagiarize. If I did plagiarize, the evidence of that would be better prose coming from me. It's just a discussion starter.

Many jobs fit this description but immediately I thought of teacher. So many kids hate teachers, so do many parents, until somewhere around 10th grade and they start to worry about college applications.

Second immediate answer: lawyers.

I don't hate those named above. My son is a lawyer, all first responders deserve our respect. Loan officers and undertakers all provide services needed. I just don't get the logic of this thought process.

On a lighter side, I don't hate sales clerks but I do get bothered when they are always asking if I need help . Of course when I do need help I can never find one.

I especially hate it when I can't find someone to ring up my purchases.

I went to the mall at Christmastime, entered Penney's and couldn't find a salesclerk. Time to pay, still could not find a salesclerk. There was not one human being in that store besides me (except for perhaps behind a door or two marked "employees only"). I was so mad, not just because of time wasted, but because I had to find those gifts all over again at another store.

Now, I'd call mall security about it, but back then it never crossed my mind.

I will also add anyone who works in the IT department of a company.

Worked in a 16 person HR Dept at major University. Dept Heads and supervisors of support units (maintenance, motor pool, student union stores & food court places) complained about Federal laws about hiring/firing having to be followed. Their Clerical staffs complained about paperwork for same. (Tho i made a bit of dent in those by acknowledging when a job was well done and understanding small omissions during our busiest times, start of each semester. They started calling when they were unsure instead of leaving stuff off the forms.)

But boy, when they were leaving and wanted their terminal leave figured or paid them in lump sum, they loved us.
