That sounds good with bacon! I forgot, my mom made gravy with hers that was delicious. I haven't been any where since where people make gravy with theirs.I remember my mother cooking liver, sautéed onions, and bacon when I was a kid, and I always liked it. My college boyfriend's mother loved liver. I cooked it for her once, and after that she always asked me to do it. I think it was the bacon that got her.![]()
Me too. When my mom made that for dinner, the onions would be kind of scorched (others may say burned), but that's the way I like them. I love liverwurst too. When my 4 kids were younger, I fed them liverwurst balls for a snack. They ate them. I was making sure they would not miss out on eating delicious liverwurst sandwiches.I myself am a Liver and Onions lover.
One of my absolute favorite hot meals.
My mom didn't bread the chicken livers, so I like them naked except for draped in onions. One of the few things my Mom didn't know how to cook beef liver with onions. The liver was always tough. In my 20s a roommate made some cooked slow with a little bit of cider vinegar in the pan. Learned how to do myself. But i'm the only one who eats now.
Same with breaded chicken livers, too much work for just me. But some years when son and grandson come to visit son asks for some and then it's worth it.
I like veal, but I have not eat it since I was 20. That's when I found out how it is raised. I don't eat lamb (except for once) ... they are too cute!I try to eat a 4 ounce piece of veal once a month for the mineral and vitamin content. I don’t necessarily like it, but it’s one of those foods that I eat not for enjoyment, but health. I usually eat Veal Parmesan.
Many years ago, I saw liverwurst all the time in the lunch meat section (predominately gray, with white around the edges) and when I looked for it a couple of years ago, couldn't find it anywhere. Will check again next time I shop.Me too. When my mom made that for dinner, the onions would be kind of scorched (others may say burned), but that's the way I like them. I llove liverwurst too. Something made 3 of them stop eating liverwurst balls. Only one of those kids still loves liverwurst and liver.
I saved that Caruso recipe to try. Thanks for posting the link. It sounds pretty good. This thread reminded me of Pasta Con Fegatini Di Pollo, Cipolle E Funghi or Pasta alla Caruso.
I usually cheat and just add a jar of tomato based pasta sauce to fried chicken livers.
If it was in square slices, it was called liver cheese. The slices were surrounded by white fat, which we removed. Doesn't that sound awful? It was good, though. Many years ago, I saw liverwurst all the time in the lunch meat section (predominately gray, with white around the edges) and when I looked for it a couple of years ago, couldn't find it anywhere. Oh my, I forgot about this! I just put some on my grocery list for next week. I like it thin sliced on a piece of toast with a thin coating of mayo on the bread. Have you tried WalMart, @MACKTEXAS ? This is the brand mine carries. Many years ago, I saw liverwurst all the time in the lunch meat section (predominately gray, with white around the edges) and when I looked for it a couple of years ago, couldn't find it anywhere. As only eater of liverwurst in the house (tho the furbabies clearly want to try it) i usually get it at deli section just enough for a couple of sandwiches. I've found out that you can freeze it, but to me it wasn't as flavorable as fresh. If it was in square slices, it was called liver cheese. The slices were surrounded by white fat, which we removed. Walmart sells liverwurst. John Morrell Braunschweiger. Not in all stores, but they do here.
I always made tiny liverwurst balls for my dogs -- hid their pills in them. I agree, liverwurst must be fresh. Oh, it's always Walmart where I go. That's the brand @WheatenLover mentioned. Thanks for the picture, Kate; will help me spot it.Oh my, I forgot about this! Mack look for Braunschweiger....Walmart as well as other grocery stores carry it, I like it on a sandwich or with just saltines. Many years ago, I saw liverwurst all the time in the lunch meat section (predominately gray, with white around the edges) and when I looked for it a couple of years ago, couldn't find it anywhere. The brand that was mentioned by WheatenLover (Morrell) is not available in my WalMart, only Jones that I posted. I'll be interested to hear if you found any or not.Oh, it's always Walmart where I go. That's the brand @WheatenLover mentioned. Thanks for the picture, Kate; will help me spot it.
Best you don't tell us where you live.I want to make a wild over-generalization. But, American women don't know how to cook.![]()
I love chopped liver. I forgot about that. It is the food of the gods.My mother would sometimes make Liver & Onions and force us to eat it, but I haven't had it since then. I used to like the chopped liver from the deli when I was young, but after I tried to make it myself when I was in college, I was so grossed out by dealing with the liver that I haven't had it since.
I just checked my Walmart, they do not have it either. The brand that was mentioned by WheatenLover (Morrell) is not available in my WalMart, only Jones that I posted. I'll be interested to hear if you found any or not.
