🐔 The Rescue Chicken

I've just got to tell you this story, that happened a few week ago.....

We were by ourselves at the roller rink, getting ready for the first private party. I was at the snack bar making coffee, etc. Dio needed to go out to our car for something or other. The next thing I know, he comes walking into the rink, with a chicken under his arm!!! I laughed so hard! I felt like I was watching a scene from an 80's sitcom!!!!!

He said that he was at the car, and the chicken just walked up to him! She's the same breed as our Girls, so we decided to take her home. We name our chickens alphabetically, and the next name was to start with the letter "F"...... so he named her Freebie.

We had a lot of fun, all day, with having a chicken in the office at the rink!

Getting her home was no problem, either.... she is obviously a pet and she's very docile. Unfortunately, getting our Girls to accept her was a whole other story. Chickens can be very mean. At first nothing happened. But later, they ganged up on her and pecked her comb into a bloody mess!
We ended up having to keep her isolated from the others. We set up our pet cage next to the chicken yard, so that everyone could see each other all day. At night, I would put her in a big box in the barn. She was the happiest when I would let her just walk around in the grass.

Every chance I got, I would put Freebie in the chicken yard with the other Girls. I set up a lawn chair, brought my book.....and just watched over everyone. If one of the chicks attacked Freebie, I would go in and punish the ofender. Freebie tried her best to stay away from the others, and minded her own business. Eventually, they all started to ignore her..... but only if I was there watching! Those mean Girls still pecked at her every chance they got!! 😡. Also, even in her cage, I had to watch the weather, etc. I put Freebie in and out of the barn as needed...... she was a lot of extra responsibility.

Well, I talked to a friend of ours about finding a new home for Freebie. Our friend has a 12year old niece who had a pet chicken that recently died. Our friend is coming on Friday to get Freebie, for her niece.

I enjoyed having her for those two weeks, but now I'm happy that she is going to a good home. She's a pet, and will be much happier being in a home where she can be pampered!

We had a pet chook when I was a child. She was black and was a bit lame. Mum allowed her to have free run in the back yard and she would often come to the back door looking for us. The back door was always propped open to allow the small dogs freedom to come and go as they pleased and Betsy (that was her name) would sometimes come inside.

Betsy lived a good life and hatched several clutches of eggs. When she died of old age she was buried with ceremony in the garden where she often fed on worms when Dad was turning over the soil.

I had a pet Rhode Island Red hen for about 5 years. She lived in my kitchen in a large dog crate/kennel and would go out in the day time until it was egg time. Then come back to the door to go in her cage to lay the egg. She was bonded with my dog and one of my cats. Loved having her for a pet!
They do make wonderful pets....I wish the others would have accepted her into their flock. Regardless, in about 1 1/2 hours from now she will be on her way to a home where she will have lots of attention and love!
