This water slide sounded really high (world's tallest), it's so sad that this young boy died. More here.

The boy died while riding the Verrückt, the world’s tallest water slide, she said. The park released no other details.According to the park’s website, the slide required two to three riders to be strapped in a raft with a total weight between 400 and 500 pounds.

The raft then “will slide down a jaw-dropping 168 foot 7 inch structure, only to be blasted back up a second massive hill and then sent down yet another gut wrenching 50 foot drop for the ultimate in water slide thrills,” the website said.

Each rider was required to be at least 54 inches tall. It was not immediately known Sunday whether Caleb met the height requirement.

Thousands of children are hurt annually on amusement rides, according to a 2013 study by the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, which examined data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Head and neck injuries were the most common at 28%, with 1.5% of the injuries requiring hospitalization, the study said.

Consumer Product Safety Commission statistics for 2015 are not available, but a review of the raw data found 45,000 injuries associated with amusement rides and water slides nationwide; about 30,000 of these cases involved those under age 18.

Verrückt, 17 stories high — higher than Niagara Falls — propels riders at 50 mph. It’s name translates as “insane” in German.

That's really sad. I remember how much I loved riding the roller coaster at the local amusement park when I was a kid. I was too innocent to believe it could be life threatening.

That's most unfortunate. I read the description of the ride and it sounds really scary! But then I used to go to amusement parks and ride really scary rides when I was young.

How sad. I think most people assume these rides are safe. I never realized the number of injuries, "thousands"? Of course these injuries involve those under 18 yr., amusement parks attract young people and families. They may need to rethink some of these extreme rides.

Well I saw a camera view of the drop from the top and it is an awful thing. I think the guy said 17 stories high and a good part of it almost straight down! Can you imagine? And apparently the harness that is supposed to hold you in place wasn't working right. I think anytime they tell you that you use a harness when on a 'slide', that's time to pick a different 'ride'. People have to be nuts to go on something like that.

I've seen this ride, and there is NO Way I would get on this thing. The local Kansas City news is reporting that there have been several incidents in the past where the harness in these rafts have failed, and they are broadcasting pictures and videos of riders who have ridden this ride with failed harnesses. The current theory is that this young kids seat belt came loose, and he was bounced out of the raft and hit his head on one of the steel supports holding up the overhead canopy. This ride is shut down now, and may not reopen until there are some Serious steps taken to protect the riders. I would not be surprised that a major lawsuit awaits the ride owners...and justifiably so.

I agree that you'd have to be nuts to go on something like that -- or to let your 10 year old do so.

I always thought that humans had a will to live, a drive to survive.....in view of that, why do people insist on doing things like these rides or jumping out of airplanes with no parachute or any of the things that leave the rest of us shaking our heads? Human nature, bizarre and twisted eh? Sometimes yeah!

When I was a little girl I used to want to go on the big roller coasters and when I was big enough I did. But now, I may go on one of the tamer ones but not one of those that drops you straight down 100 feet!!

You were braver than me Ruthanne! The only roller coaster I ever went on was the one in Space Mountain at Disney Land. Maybe because I couldn't see what was going on, it was okay, but the last time I even got on a ferris wheel I was uncomfortable. Not 'scared' but really uncomfortable. I think I was in my 30's then.

Last time I was on a roller coaster was about 8 years ago and we were jammed in together and we both were laughing so hard we didn't have time to be scared. I have been on the ferris wheel and when they stop you at the top and wait there, that is scary!

Terribly sad story. I've never been one for amusement parks. Rode Space Mountain too in Paris once to please the grandkids, but did not get anything out of it.

My husband was just reading in the paper that the boy was actually decapitated....so sad. :(

The "safety belts" on this ride are little more than Velcro strips....hardly the type of harness that would keep a rider safe. It's a wonder that this hasn't happened before now. Adults might be able to grasp the handles and remain in the raft if the belts come loose, but a light weight child could easily be thrown out of the raft.

Then, the news reports about the 3 girls that were thrown out of a ferris wheel when their chair became caught on the side of the wheel frame, occurred because the ride was Not level, and the entire assembly was beginning to tilt to one side. Most of the major amusement park rides are fairly safe, but these State and County Fair rides are often put up in a hurry, and there is little regulation and oversight governing their safety.

Appalling.

Two women and 10 year old not under 400 pds??? The scale malfunctioning that day? The scale should be an item an inspector should be checking calibrating. No Dept of Weights and Measures in that state?

Our rides weren't this scary. I went to an amusement park about 2 years ago, went on one ride. I kept my eyes closed the entire time and did not go on any more rides. My company had paid to have the entire park to itself but I could not deal with the stress. Personally I think that a lot of these rides are not only dangerous, but also stress inducing. These are NOT the rides that we went on as kids.

That ride is too dangerous for a young child. I hope they have closed it down permanently.

The park and the ride are back open. The CEO of the park says the reason they built it here is because the State doesn't have height restrictions on rides. IOW, our illustrious State which feels any and all regulating of business should be done away with is at least somewhat at fault for taking this 10 year old boy's life.
