  • A group of Northeastern University students in Boston was dismissed for violating the university's coronavirus rules after they were reportedly caught gathered in a room without wearing masks or socially distancing.
  • Tuition and room fees for the 11 students won't be reimbursed.
  • The students also won't be able to take their courses online but are eligible to return to school in the spring.

Also At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where students are being tested twice a week, there have been more than 1,000 positive cases since mid-August.

"The irresponsible and, I might add, dangerous actions of a small number of our students has created the very real possibility of ending an in-person semester for all of us here at Illinois," Chancellor Robert Jones said.

Following a spike in cases, Jones said the university has disciplined over 100 students and two have been suspended.

"We believe taking swift action to identify and remove students who refuse to follow our safety guideline is the right decision," Jones said.
Officials said students have been going to parties while knowingly COVID positive, avoiding contract tracers and trying to beat the app that uses negative test results for access to campus buildings.

I'm beginning to think that the quicker it blows through the unconcerned in this age group the better. They're building natural herd immunity for the rest of us and will have it over with before Thanksgiving and Christmas with grandparents.

Their death rate currently from Covid-19, influenza and pneumonia combined is only 0.001% from 2/1/2020 to 8/29/2020. There have been 636 deaths from Feb 1 to Aug 29 for ages 15-24 in the US. To give those numbers perspective, over 6,000 between the age of 20-24 die each year in automobile accidents, so we're looking at a vastly lower risk of death from Covid-19 than automobile accidents for this age range. They're already out there endangering their and our lives just by driving.

Protect vulnerable populations, concerned students and staff on campus by allowing online classes, partitioned areas for instructors, PPE etc and let it rip through the rest. It's much easier to protect the vulnerable on campus from Covid-19 infections in this age group than it is to protect people from them on the roads.

In our area, there seems to be Two groups experiencing the largest percentage of illness.....1. elderly in nursing homes, and 2. young people who are not adhering to the recommendations.

This Labor Day weekend will probably result in another spike in CV cases during the latter portion of Sept.

Yesterday morning,28 college students at St Bonaventure University were suspended for breaking Covid rules,they held a big party Saturday night in one of the dorms, univ officials were livid.Their punishment,they can't attend classes in person but can remain on campus until this case is resolved
I think they should have been kicked out altogether

Sounds like the university is giving them due process. Quite admirable when you think about it.
 
These kids were stupid, no doubt, but I don't think the punishment fits the crime. It's like levying a $30,000 fine. That's Draconian. What would I have done? I'd have sent them home, but allowed for on-line classes, and maybe refunded half the room and board. If it was up to some of y'all, we'd all be locked in our homes forever. I think what Annie said makes more sense.

I fully agree with these statements.

The universities are partly to blame here. Better than any other entities, they are well-versed in the nature of 18-25 year olds. What a fool's errand to put together thousands or tens of thousands of them, then insist they not congregate or engage in high risk behavior.
