I honest to God do not know what is wrong with the kids today but they must be stupid. We never would've done something so dangerous to ourselves when we were kids. And what bothers me even more is how unaware their parents are. I mean come on! Your child is in the other room choking themselves and you don't know about it?

Frankly I think some of these sites shouldn't be accessible to children under 18. I don't know why computers don't come with some sort of parental controls. I thought they did but maybe I'm wrong on that. I just don't understand leaving a 10 yo or 12 yo unattended with no supervision at a computer long enough for them to do that kind of crap.

My friends and I did this all the time back in 1969. Our parents didn't see because we were old enough to be out amongst ourselves. To me it was just part of being a kid. It was years later that I learned that depriving the brain of oxygen was dangerous. I have to give the kids a bye on this one cuz it was exciting and passing out felt great. We honestly didn't know it could be dangerous. Maybe these kids didn't either.

There is a reason why "If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you?" is a cliche. My friends and I did stupid things when I was in my teens too. There is a river nearby and we use to jump off the cliffs, challenging the next person to jump from higher spot. One time someone I knew jumped wrong and ended up breaking his legs. Could have been worse. Did that stop us ? Nope, we went back doing the samething a month later. Just one of a few stupid things we all do so like Chic, I have to give a kids a bye on this too.

Unfortunately that's what young people do. Being 18 years old does not make one mature. In the 60's swallowing live gold-fish was one of the challenges. Nowdays it's eating Tide-pods and other deadly activities. Parents have to go the extra mile to warn them about the dangers of these risky behaviors long before they reach the age where they might be tempted, or coerced into taking part in something like this. Unfortunately, teens often heed their friends advice before their parents despite the parents very best efforts.

i don't see depriving yourselves of oxygen as part of being a kid. it wasn't part of my childhood. i would never have agreed to that. i can't see where any kid would think that would be a fun thing to do to themselves. i just don't understand that. *shrugs*

When I was in 3rd grade, a similar fad was going around.
Panting very fast several times, taking a deep breath & holding it, then sticking a thumb in the mouth to block air while trying to exhale. The toughest guy was the one who stayed conscious the longest.
After one kid had a serious head injury when he passed out & fell on his head, the principal & teachers gave us all speeches about it.

There was also a "macho" thing in elementary school where kids would show off & brag about their injuries. If a kid showed bandages, he would be accused of faking an injury. If a kid had a cast, he got the most attention & respect, since a cast can't really be faked.
