The 13-year-old boy shot to death Saturday in what police said was an attempted carjacking had nine prior carjacking and robbery charges, all in a five-week period in the District’s Anacostia area, according to two officials familiar with the youth’s history.

It is hard to feel for family when after NINE charges they certainly could not kid themselves that he was out playing sports or something.....

Not only their juvenile/criminal record but I doubt they were doing well in school ie grade and attendance. All are alarms this early in the school year especially. The kid knew carjacking was a crime but since they are still on the streets after 5 arrest I doubt they care what the system will do them.

This is a prime example of why not publicly naming or allowing transparency with juvenile court proceedings for underage criminals has been abused and increasingly endangers the public. Repeat offenders regardless of age, need to be brought into the public light and not protected by apparently unsuccessful advocates.

With felonies especially. Adult crimes adult consequences. Can send them to a juvenile prison but other than that they are treated like an adult including picture in the paper.

Too many think there`s an adult switch than can be turned on after 18. It's not that easy and if a 13 year turns it on via adult crimes expect consequences.

I'm sure they love their picture in the paper.

like so many of these all articles on this incident have some nice school photo or sports team photo ...
it a false narrative to pretend these kids were not just thugs.
if willing to carjack at this age with a weapon...... what else have they done or are they willing to do.... hopefully the boy who was this kids accomplice can see stealing cars in not worth your life. hopefully his parents will wake up and tell him they do not want that notification when the next person shoots him dead too....

It seems he was headed for an early death or a long relationship with the criminal justice system. Years ago, juveniles like him were deemed "incorrigible." Unless they themselves took dramatic steps to find a new pathway, there was little public sympathy for the consequences of the lives they'd chosen.

I didn't mean to shock you @Jeni, but at 13 he and his family had proven themselves sufficiently unable to control him or unconcerned by his acts' consequences (9 priors and God only knows how many times he hadn't been caught).

Carjacking while pretending to have a gun at 13 - numerous times! What do you suppose he'd have upped the ante to by 16 or 18? Armed robbery? Murder?
