18 charged in the hazing death of a fraternity pledge at Penn State campus after they waited 12 hours to call for help.

Even after finding the victim hours later unconscious with blood on his face members waited another 40 minutes to call for help.

I can't believe with all the information out there and/or tv shows about drug & alcohol abuse that no one realized the victim could be in trouble let alone proceed with the ritual.

Just as bad the atmosphere among the fraternities on this campus was such that this was an accident waiting to happen. It's troubling after the Sandusky scandal and other hazing incidents/fatalities around the country that Penn State had not already flat out banned hazing, alcohol etc on campus. One would assume Penn State would go out of it's way to avoid any and all negative publicity. I guess we should be thankful this wasn't covered up.

hazing ignored

Twisted fate has the son of ex coach Joe Paterno (present during the Sandusky scandal/years) being elected to the board of trustees for Penn State. Not all are happy

It seems Penn State including staff, administration, coaches etc appeared to have looked the other way during a child abuse scandal might also have ignored partying and/or hazing fraternities.

Fraternity hazing has been an issue for decades and comes up yearly.

2012 http://onwardstate.com/2012/04/23/hazing-the-unspoken-problem-that-isnt-going-away/

Not only was Penn State mentioned in article but in a 32 year period 1970-2012 there were 104 college hazing fatalities.

In 2015 Penn State was sued for hazing.

Throw in the riot last year after a football game it appears the culture on the Penn State desperately needs to change.

If the victim had 'only' gotten sick and hospitalized rather than die I don't think most would've even blinked an eye.

That is a horrifying story. I read the documents in the case posted at the end of the article, and the story became in more horrible.

Not only did they not call 911, they treated him so badly while he was unconscious and as he started to move a bit. One boy punched him in the stomach. Why in the hell would he do that?! They boy certainly wasn't fighting back or posing any threat. And when another pledge suggested they needed to take him to the emergency room, that pledge was shoved against the wall and his plea ignored. When the injured boy fell off the couch, they slammed him back onto it. When he had fallen off the couch, some stepped over his body and kept going. What kind of heartless morons were these young men??!! I hope they all get the book(s) thrown at them. One life gone because of senseless behavior and another 8 or so ruined.

Penn State has had a lot of litigation events the past several years. It's about time that they hire a staff of counselors that can somehow keep students and administrators on a short leash and bring back the old Penn State of years ago when it was well known as a first class academia it was once known as being.

I think that Penn State's location has a lot to do with the students being out of control. As for the administrators, I believe that whoever is vetting these morons needs to be fired.

The last time that I was on Penn State's campus it was to arrest two males for armed robbery. What does that tell you about PSU. I know, all large schools have these types of issues, but it seems like every week, locally here in PA, PSU makes negative headlines for one type of issue or another.

My whole thing is especially after the Sandusky scandal Penn State should've gone out of their way avoiding another scandal period. It's seems like it didn't. The riots after Paterno was fired to me was a true indicator of the culture of Penn State administrators & student body alike. It's 6 years later and they still have out of control students. If they want to get drunk or high behind the scenes without incident I don't give a hoot. But there have been incidents.

Any big college campus should be giving all students some drug & alcohol abuse lectures in orientation-all four years. Don't have to make a big deal or course out of it but the students & administrators should now about alcohol poisoning, symptoms of intoxication and what to do in a drug or alcohol emergency. They need a scared straight lecture lasting no more than hour because their attention span is poop anyway.

In the meantime tell the kiddies that if a person is gray they are probably dead.

I think schools should ban hazing all together. I know they couldn't stop it all, but they could give the ban some teeth, like shutting down the fraternity if they get caught at it. What's the point of hazing, anyway -- sounds just like a whole bunch of young male stupidity macho stuff to me. I mean, get drunk and disorderly all you want to, but don't set out to harm or humiliate others while you're about it.
