I was thinking about the 1918 epidemic compared to our current situation.

In 1918 approx. 675,000 Americans died at a time when the population was around 103 million.

To approach the same level of severity it would mean more than 2,025,000 would die based on our current population of approx. 330 million.

That makes me wonder if this situation is less severe or if we are doing a better job at managing public health.

The 1918 epidemic was greatly amplified by WWI. Close quarters in barracks and hospitals, plus movement of troops nationwide and worldwide spread the illness like wildfire. Medicine, public health, and science have all come a long way in the past 100 years.

We have better health care. Compare how many hospitals we have to how few there were in 1918. Also we have antibiotics to treat Covid related infections. We have contact tracing. We have so much more treatment then what was available in 1918.
