1970s Things That Kids No Longer Do

In the 1970’s, cell phones were something that Captain Kirk used to communicate with the Enterprise while on a planet. Most homes had only one phone, it was a landline tethered to a wall or table, and we were readily familiar with rotary dials. If you had to make a call away from home, pay phones were available in many locations, even gas stations. Some were full booths, and may have had a folding door you could close. They were hot in the summer, may have smelled funny once inside, and could have sticky floors…

Hmmmm....where would Clark Kent change into his Superman outfit these days? There was always a convenient phone booth back then....

Remember "phone booth stuffing"?

Last time I was in a group with some young (20s) photographers we were trying to fit into a small space together to get the angle on a shot. I yelled up the line..."Move down the bus please!" and got blank looks and odd stares lol.

When did buses stop having conductors?

Sorry...I will go back into the 60's.

Playing marbles before and after school. Using a Ducan Yo-yo to perform tricks. Build wooden airplanes from scratch, that you then can fly with gas engines. Make and fly homemade kites. Sidewalk roller skate. Learn to read music and play an instrument in band. (This was required in Grade School)

Kids used to go mall ratting. Translation: a group of them would get a couple of parents to pick up their friends and then drop them off at the mall, where they’d hang out, window shop, grab a meal or a shake or ice cream, and generally make a nuisance of themselves till the designated time when the parents would come bsak to pick them up.

These days there few malls left, and anyway the kids are more inclined to gather at someone’s house and play video games.

We used to be all over town playing sports or bicycling or going fishing or ...ect. Now, you hardly ever see kids outside. Most don't have summer jobs either.

In summer months, street hockey on quiet residential streets. If a car came, the kids lifted the goal aside (it wasn't heavy) and moved out of the way. Now it seems to be illegal in most places.
