I caught some of that. Over simplified but mass immigration becomes out of control immigration stressing a nation's resources. Bill also noted that stuff that works in a smaller country might not elsewhere.

Smaller in population land mass equal to America. Smaller in land mass but if working of percent against population Australia has figured out the negative impact of illegals on it's economy. Documented guest workers were needed and still are to an extent for farm labor. Even that is changing due to machinery that replaces the need for them. Other menial jobs and some skilled labor are filled by both documented & illegal. The growth of illegals wasn't a large problem before but given the increased loss of manual labor jobs to robotics and high tech ways to manufacture, that segment of the population is becoming more of a strain of state and federal budgets. If America's economy was booming and higher paying full time jobs were in place I don't think this would be an issue.


Were it possible for illegals to walk into Australia I think Australia's approach would be no different. Getting it right from the beginning I applaud Australia.
 

Basing immigration on actual need and not desire is the more practical way to go about it. Outcomes are what become more desirable ie a gainfully employed new citizen or guest worker.
 
Australia's off shore mandatory detention policy is a disgrace. I take no pride in mistreating vulnerable people, including children, for crass political advantage. When the refugees were white, European and Christian the thinking was different.
