Two people have been killed after a private jet lost both engines and crashed onto a highway in Florida on Friday, authorities have said.
Five people were onboard the Bombardier Challenger 600 when it came down about 3.15pm on Interstate 75 near the small city of Naples, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Airport spokesperson Robin King told AFP news agency that two minutes before the plane was scheduled to land at Naples Municipal Airport, the pilot radioed air traffic control and said he was requesting an emergency landing after losing both engines.

Mr King said: “The air traffic controller immediately cleared the aircraft to land when the pilot declared that he would not make it to the runway ... [and] attempted a landing on I-75.”
He also confirmed that three people had survived the crash, but the Collier County Sheriff’s Office said a further two people had died on impact.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the plane struck a car and a pickup truck after crashing into the highway.

The plane was operated by the Hop-a-Jet charter aviation carrier, and WPLG, a Miami-based television station, said the flight was ultimately destined for an executive airport in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where the company is based.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the jet took off from Ohio State University Airport in Columbus, with an agency spokesman adding that members of the NTSB’s crash investigation team arrived on the scene within a few hours.

Just terrible! From the reports, I'm still not clear if the drivers and pilot were killed (didn't watch the video). Can you imagine driving, then suddenly seeing a plane coming at you?! I was on the highway a few decades ago and a plane was coming in for a landing. It looked like it was going to land on the car in front of me. I never tailgate, so I was far enough away, but that was freaky! May those poor souls killed in this crash R.I.P.

It’s considered a rarity when both engines quit working simultaneously on a twin engine jet plane. The last time I heard of that happening was when Cactus 1549, US Airways plane that went down in the Hudson River). That was caused by a bird strike. That’s really an abnormality.

It will be interesting to find out how both engines quit working simultaneously. In my 33 years as a pilot, I never lost an engine. I had rudder, flaps and slats problems, which is scary enough. I even had brake issues once. Since Naples sits on the Gulf coast, would it have been possible for the plane to have had a bird strike, or maybe it was flying to low and hit electrical lines? I have no idea at this point, but the pros from the NTSB will figure it out.

A friend of mine travels that highway often. She was glad everything was cleared before her trip to the airport Thursday. She also said that it seems the pilot did everything he could to minimize the damage and loss of lives, bless his soul. May he and the co-pilot R.I.P.

I read there’s been no word from the NTSB as of yet. Other pilots have also been surprised at the two engines failing at the same time. The plane was on its second flight of the day.
