2021 PTSD?

This is not a facetious question. Do you think it's possible to have PTSD from recent and past events of 2021? I am beyond stressed with the Covid isolation of the past 11 months and all the election upheaval, hate and violence. Now we have something else to divide family and friends: the silencing of inciting violence and hate on Twitter and Facebook. I don't subscribe to either of those platforms mainly for those reasons. But now we are interfering with "free speech." Personally, I don't agree with that point of view. The First Amendment applies to the government's interference in free speech, not the right of private companies to monitor hate speech, etc.
In the world we live in now, everyone thinks they have the "right " to say anything to anyone regardless of how hateful or inflammatory it may be. We no longer filter our speech for the sake of civility and social media makes it worse. Our "freedom of speech" has gone waaay overboard. Just turn on TV and listen to the dialogue on most programs. Anything goes.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not stressed enough to do myself harm. However, if I left this earth tomorrow. I would be okay with that. PTSD?

You mean PSTD related to 2020?

Yes, absolutely, particularly if the people who are battling such are, or were alone, have no family, have no outlet to allow them a form of a release related to associated stress, anxiety, and hardship of being cooped-up and always being isolated and alone, for sure.

I watched this video this morning and I felt my blood bubbling and boiling all the way through, right up to the point where the girl broke down, and that's when I started crying. Double troubling for me was knowing the incidents of racism as witnessed in the video took place in Germany, a country where I would never have guessed such existed.

I thought this conversation made for a good home for this video and I hope you feel the same, Linda.

As for myself and PTSD, not so much, but I do believe that one of the reasons as to why my husband and I enjoy being at home by ourselves so much, is because of all the external factors that exist in this world today. The lack of care that so many people show, the lack of love, the lack of spirit, the crime, the deceit, the underhanded ways of society, the greed, the materialism, the low values of so many, how disposable human life has become, the unrestricted words that people all too often speak without extending any consideration over any fallout or aftermath that may accompany.

I hope my ramble is in keeping with your entry.

Thanks for your thoughts, @Aunt Marg. Yes, I meant 2020! I feel very much like you. The world seems so out of control.

I couldn't agree more, Linda, and it many ways it is out of control, and from all that I see it continues to spiral out of control.

Even just going back 30 years ago until now, a noticeable and progressive change in the manner related to how people treat others so negatively has gained momentum steadily, and it's becoming more and more present and chronic with each day that passes.

When I hear of reports as to the chronic use of physician prescribed drugs to help people combat depression and stress, that tells me everything I need to know as to how complicated our world has become. In many ways technology hasn't made our world easier, it's made it harder.

Linda. Do you have an outlet, a little something that you thoroughly enjoy doing, something that allows you to forget about any and all outside influences?

For me it's gardening.

No matter what kind of day I'm having, as soon as I engage myself in a little gardening, I forget about the stresses that plague me, I forget about the sounds around me, other than nature, I forget about time, and when I come back in I'm a new person for it. I feel refreshed, energized, and ready to face yet another day.

The Physical risks of this virus are bad enough....but, the isolation and stress it is causing for many, has to be taking a toll on them mentally. More than ever, it is imperative that people find something interesting to occupy their time. Watching all the negativity taking place in the daily news will drive a lot of people to the brink.

:everyone thinks they have the "right " to say anything to anyone regardless of how hateful or inflammatory it may be. We no longer filter our speech for the sake of civility and social media makes it worse. Our "freedom of speech" has gone waaay overboard."

That's why some social media sites monitor their subscribers. That's their prerogative.

@Aunt Marg, I find crocheting very relaxing. Usually I will pop in my earbuds, tune into a favorite author's audiobook and start working on a crochet project. This year I plan to do lap blankets for the elderly in nursing homes. I'm hoping to complete at least two per month and to deliver them at the beginning of December. Crocheting is for me what gardening is for you. Quiet and peaceful relaxation.

hate speech is against the law here, whether it's an off the cuff comment to someone.. or a speech in public..it's arrestable and people can actually be imprisoned for it... so no muttering N words or any derogatory comments about people here, or you will find yourself being arrested

I think that is a very grey area as some people are offended by everything ... how can hate speech be defined without going overboard to being abused.
With all the REAL crime in the world people think they should imprison someone for an off the cuff utterance?
clog up the court system even more to deal with that is insane.
Or is it like so many people think make a law and throw out threats of fines/ prison .......that only effects those already civil and NOT the problem

people seem to have forgotten or simply not taught manners or filtering their self for civility ........that is a parenting fail more then free speech gone amok....

I think this isolation and issues surrounding the handling all around not just one place ....has made the loss of civility expand ten fold.
I do not see this going away any time soon ...... people have lost connection and may have lost friends even because some do NOT respect others thoughts or opinions on things......it seems to be get in line with the group think or we will come for you ....... that is scary to me....

Agree 100%, Linda. It happened to me last year...I was a mess. The biggest thing that helped me was turning off any and all news stations, newspapers, and all magazines. And I can’t even tell you how much calmer and lighter of mind, body, and soul, that has made me. I also started walking which I now find myself looking forward to. I am sp praying this country will come back together again.

I think it's completely reasonable to think that some people are suffering from PTSD from their experiences in 2020.

I know I keep bringing this book up, but it is so relevant these days. If you want to read something that might give you a more positive view of mankind and the future of the world please consider reading Humankind: A Hopeful History by Rutger Bregman. It puts the negative human news and history we have into a perspective that they are overblown in the amount of attention they get. It also sheds light in incidents and studies from the past and shows they were not presented accurately and in some cases were manipulated to give negative results. I know it's available as an audio book because that's one way to get it from our library.

I think that if one were to read the terms of service for the social media sites they could see why people would be banned or have their posts hidden or deleted. The social media sites are providing a service and one has to agree to their terms of service to use their service. As far as I know the people who've had their usage of the platforms affected violated the terms of service.

My heart goes out to this young woman. It brings back episodes from my own life, regarding blatant racism. Sorry for going OT.

No, you come on, Jim.

Shame on me for wasting my time and buying into your asinine reply to me, but here goes anyway just for the sake of squaring things off, just for Jim.

I don't have my head buried in the sand, I'm well aware of history, and as far as racism goes, it exists everywhere and always will. That was not my point, and you know that.

Read again. "Double troubling for me was knowing the incidents of racism as witnessed in the video took place in Germany, a country where I would never have guessed such existed".

"Never would have guessed such existed", the manner in which the racism was so blatantly cast, on camera and all, so publically, and so boldly. I never guessed people in this day and age, particularly in a European country, would be so detached.

Why don't you come here and put forth something constructive for a change, rather than nit-picking people's posts apart all the time.

That's a dirty rotten shame, Pinky. I feel for you in a big way.

Yes, when the girl broke down in the video, that really hit me hard, too. She seems so kind and so down to earth, so lovely. It broke my heart watching that.

There are laws in the US that protect speech and also laws that protect people from verbal abuse and verbal assault. People risk being fined or placed under arrest and jailed for these crimes depending on the degree of the assault.

What laws protect people from verbal abuse?

If you use a racial slur during a physical assault, you can be charged with a hate crime, but I don't know of any laws that protect you from insults or bullying, other than rules they have in schools or the workplace, but those aren't laws.
