Began raining about 5pm this Sunday afternoon as I walked into a late mass. This multi storm series is forecast to last for at least 8 days. The modest storm on Tuesday was after a long 6 week warm dry period while the East was frigid. This storm will soon be major national news.

Is setting up to be one of the coldest large storms of the decade. As much as 6 to 7 feet of light dry cold snow at 8000 foot elevations with snow levels Thursday as low as 1000 feet. So snow possibly in our Sierra Nevada and Coast Range foothills that are certain to close many roads.

Note, average winter snow elevation levels in the Sierra Nevada are about 6000 feet and each winter a few drop to as low as 3000 feet. Each decade a few are lower, so yeah this could be rare. The colder snow falls at, the better the fresh snow "powder" skiing experience. Arguably maybe the most incredible overall visceral experience of anything that words cannot convey.

I am going to try and reach down river from Yosemite Valley during the day Tuesday sleeping in my car, a 200 mile drive so I can do photography in a winter wonderland on Wednesday morning walking about in snowshoes. So will be carefully analyzing reports, ready to make adjustments that could shift the days.

And then after returning home, will find out when I can reach and ski deep fresh powder conditions. Expect all 3 trans Sierra highways will close and all 3 of my Tahoe season pass resorts may be unreachable plus may struggle to open terrain due to avalanche issues. Dangerous often scary to drive a vehicle in.

At age 77 I can ski for free at one west side of the range smaller resort, that is both closer and a safer drive. So that is my target. Will be helmet mounting a GoPro 11 when weather permits.

The storm is also forecast to put rain into Southwest desert areas that have already begun wildflower blooming after the huge holiday storms weeks ago. More rains there could boost wildflower levels greatly. And that would result in long road trips by month end that would conflict with skiing.

So yeah, huge planning, logistical preparation, and careful follow through issues for mr dave. A very exciting time for this old guy but also dangerous.
