"Robert R. Card, the man charged with murder in the mass shootings in Lewiston that killed at least 18 people, and wounded 13 others, has been in the US Army Reserve for nearly 21 years and is currently assigned as a petroleum supply specialist, the Army said Thursday.
Card appears to be part of a family with deep roots in central Maine, specifically the small town of Bowdoin, which is located some 30 miles north of Portland. According to authorities, Card’s most recent address is on Meadow Road where city property records list the residence as being owned by a close relative.

Card frequently competed during the spring of 2012. The now suspended Facebook profile of Card — archived in screen grabs and videos — lists bowling as a favorite activity. In one post, the user describes finishing a 20-year career in the Army earlier in the year. An Army spokesperson told the Globe that Card first enlisted in December 2002.
Card also appeared to be somewhat active on X, formerly known as Twitter, following and liking content from Tucker Carlson, Donald Trump, and an extremism researcher from the University of Maine.
He had just joined the platform in November 2022. His account — which bore a photo of him smiling and holding a fish — has since been suspended.
According to state records, Card was licensed as an electrician’s helper for two years in 2004 and 2006, but let that license lapse. Records indicate that he worked with an older relative who holds a master electrician’s license.
A bulletin put out by the Maine Information and Analysis Center, an internal database for law enforcement officials, previously stated that Card served as a firearms instructor in the Maine Army Reserves. But officials revoked that statement Thursday morning, stating “there is no indication that Card attended any advanced weaponry course.”
The bulletin also noted that Card recently reported mental health issues, including “hearing voices” and threatening “to shoot up a military installations in southern Maine.” The bulletin also said Card was reported to have been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks this summer and then released.
