Five of them are in critical condition and I saw on the news that one or two may lose limbs. The recruits were from "various law enforcements agencies". The driver passed the breathalyzer test and will now be charged with attempted murder.
"The SUV was reportedly driving on the wrong side of the road and swerved into a group of 75 cadets running. According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, 25 recruits were injured in the crash. All victims were taken to multiple hospitals in the area. Those with the worst injuries were taken to UC Irvine Medical Center and St. Francis Medical Center.

The driver, identified by law enforcement as 22-year-old Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez of Diamond Bar, was taken into custody near the scene of the crash."

There are reports of pot in the car but no signs he was intoxicated on scene.

There's no ooops with a pack of runners in front of you and he was going the wrong way to begin with. Sounds intentional. And if from the area or works in the area he knew that's not the first time the recruits ran on that street or others.

As with other such incidents, I've never understood why any pedestrian would want to be in a traffic lane where there are vehicles. It is sheer foolishness. Yes, I know the street was "closed," but signs never stopped a 4,000 lb. car. I even avoid crossing the street whenever possible. I know there are crackpots who would deliberately run over people - both intentionally as well as due to being intoxicated or on their phones.

And there are other possible reasons - like elderly people who shouldn't be driving: (10 killed, 70 injured)

One recruit has already lost a limb. Sadly, others with their injuries have most likely had their career ended before it ever began.

A news report out of LA said that the family made a statement that he was tired and may have been using marijuana. We will not know of any drug impairment until test results come back. Sadly, there is no "legal limit" on the amount of marijuana someone may have in their body in most states unlike alcohol. Their is no sobriety test that can be used on the street to assess marijuana/drug use as for alcohol either.

Sheriff's in Colorado warned that legalizing marijuana would result in high traffic accidents and deaths from those accidents. They have been proven right. Drivers involved in traffic accidents using marijuana has increased by 22% to 25% since legalization in these states compared to pre-legalization stats.

Sorry, I am digressing into another topic.

I'm not criticizing the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept., but when I was in the Army and we were marching / jogging on base we always had traffic guards in reflective vests at the front and rear of our formation, watching for traffic that may need warning and re-directing. Perhaps that will be a feature that LACSD will adopt in the future.

I am saddened, sickened and angered by this, young men and women mowed down by some moron. Now, doubly appalled that he is released due to "lack of evidence"? No doubt there will be civil suits against this man, but he's 22 and likely doesn't have any assets.
Villanueva said on a cable news network that the suspect would be "provisionally" released as investigators worked to build a stronger case.

This is an appalling and ironic decision to not press charges, given that the trial of the Waukesha Wisconsin Christmas Parade drive thru' killer has taken place , and he's just been sentenced to 6 life sentences, plus 700 years, for killing 6 and injuring many more in a street parade..
Maybe there was evidence in the Wisconsin case that proved intent. This case may require more time to prove intent, then he may be charged.

I hope the ongoing investigation provides the evidence they need for the charges he deserves. It doesn't sound like an accident.

My thoughts and prayers goes out to all who have been injured and involved in this attack. Also to the first responders having to deal with their own being involved.

Apparently, the recruits had just passed a fire station on their run when the firefighters heard a collision and responded immediately. This surely may have saved lives.

I would be interested in the long term stats around traffic accidents involving alcohol impaired drivers.

I guess we can rack this up to just another case of craziness that happened in the world we are now living in. Only a coward would do such a thing. I saw the video and in my mind, there was no doubt that it was intentional.

I hope so, but I just have to wonder out loud: Driving wrong way, broad daylight, road is level and straight, no weather problems...seems that at the very least a charge of reckless or negligent driving, enhanced with causing great bodily harm....

I can't even venture a guess as to what he was thinking. It will be interesting to find out what it was. Was he on some kind of medication?
