3 Killed, At Least 3 Missing Due To Massive Landslide In Alaska

That is very sad, was there a road there before, I wonder,
or did it bring the trees down in the slide.

I believe the initial news report I saw said that the only road into the town was blocked by the landslide. Since rescues were being conducted, they must've found a way to get to people. Trees were probably in it's path. Look at how many trees are on either side. I don't know if there was a road between them or if the mudslide made that "path" shown in the video cover photo. The slide was so powerful that I believe if any trees were in its path, they came down.
 

I missed hearing about this. Thanks for posting. I saw the aftermath of a mudslide in California when sone of the stars’ homes were buried like Cher and Carson.

We were skiing in Aspen once and the other couple we were with wanted to go off trail, but my wife and I decided to stay put. A few hours later, we heard sirens and saw helicopters flying overhead. The first thing I thought of was that there was an avalanche. I was right and the other couple that went off trail was in it, but thankfully, they were extricated and ok.

Like we say 911...always follow your first mind. Good thing you and your wife didn't go and that your friends were rescued.
 
Can't tell from the image, but I wonder if there was some logging that had occurred above... perhaps even helicopter logging. There may not have been. But in southern British Columbia, where I live, events like the one in this news story provoked a big wave of forestry reform.

It's mountainous here, and local residents formed groups to become informed about the hydrology, biology, and soil science of forests. The groups became much more knowledgeable about forest-harvest practices. Over a period of about 10 years, the pressure residents put on government & industry led to altered & improved road building & forest-harvest practices. But this sort of concern may not be relevant to the particular event in the news item.
