At least 40 migrants were reportedly found dead inside a tractor-trailer in San Antonio, Texas, on Monday.

They were discovered inside an 18-wheeler near railroad tracks in San Antonio's Southwest Side neighborhood, according to a Reuters report citing a law enforcement official. An unconfirmed report from San Antonio ABC affiliate KSAT put the death toll at 42, based on unidentified police sources.

A spokesperson for the Bexar County Sheriff's Office confirmed to Newsweek that the San Antonio Police Department was responding to the incident, while the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) would be the lead agency in the probe.

This is so tragic. They most likely succumbed to the heat. It has been over 100 degrees in TX. It is so incredibly sad that life is so bad for them in their countries that they are willing to risk their lives to come to the US. I guess we should all appreciate what we have here, regardless of all the division and negative news. We still have it pretty good.
 

A lot of us here have no idea what a life without hope must be like.
I can understand wanting to leave the place that is offering nothing. What I do not understand is the depth of despair these people must feel to undertake incredibly risky methods to get to somewhere that offers hope.
Okay, I may want to leave here, but I would do it so there was no risk involved. Understanding I have it very well and have the means to leave.
To have nothing, to risk the life of yourself and family defies my comprehension. As I say, living as I do, in a well off country, I am not exposed to utter despair.
Even when I was homeless and destitute I never thought about fleeing my country.
Too much sadness in the world and from what we see, not going to get better for a very large percentage of the population.

I can blame no one for taking any way they can to leave Mexico

Deported three times while learning

Slept where no one cares to be
Worked fields like none other
Wanted to be a ‘landcaseper’
Did OK at it, but didn’t put enough food on the table of his ambition
Became a roofer’s helper
A roofer
A framer
A finish carpenter
Took no hand outs
Paid his way
Now has his own business

I just sent a notarized letter to a dept here in Oregon, telling them why he should remain here while he studies to become a citizen

His son, my grandson;
Graduated The Oregon National Guard Youth Challenge Program (OYCP)
With honors
I had the privilege of being his mentor

Another little tidbit that makes life, making a living, in Mexico a struggle;

A business associate of mine had a factory in Tecate, just across the border.
A very nice man.
Every time he'd give a guy a raise, the Fed would take it away with heavier taxes.
Very frustrating for him and his employees.

Mr Justice Sweeney said: "I have no doubt that the conspiracy was a sophisticated, long-running and profitable one to smuggle mainly Vietnamese people across the channel."
He said on the fatal trip the temperature had been rising along with the carbon dioxide levels throughout, hitting 40C (104F) while the container was at sea on 22 October 2019.
"There were desperate attempts to contact the outside world by phone and to break through the roof of the container," the judge said.
"All were to no avail and, before the ship reached Purfleet, [the victims] all died in what must have been an excruciatingly painful death."

The victims had used a metal pole to try to punch through the roof but only managed to dent the interior.
The court heard some of their final desperate phone messages, including one where a man spoke with ragged breaths as he apologised to his family.
"I can't breathe," he said. "I want to come back to my family. Have a good life."
Justice Sweeney added: "The willingness of the victims to try and enter the country illegally provides no excuse for what happened to them."

According to reports on the news, the driver in Texas,
unlatched the doors, but didn't pull them open, the
poor souls inside, didn't have the strength to open
them far enough to let fresh air in, they have got 16
who are alive, and they have arrested 3 men.

As the prospect of being able to stay in the U.S. and seek that protection has become more difficult, deaths have risen.
At least 650 migrants died crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in 2021, more than in any other year since the International Organization for Migration, a part of the United Nations, began tracking the data in 2014.

We haven't got data for 2022.

The number one problem in Mexico is that "the people" do not stand up for basic human rights. The result is that the corrupt gov't officials steal all the profit from businesses and leave citizens only a few crumbs.
Freedom and human rights are not free. You must FIGHT for them !
The Mexican gov't COULD do the same as the U.S. and allow foreign business to build factories to make, for example, autos and pay a truly decent wage.
In any event, Mexican citizens can get a U.S. working Visa and live in Mexico , but WORK in the U.S. Every day, thousands upon thousands of Mexicans cross the border EVERY DAY to work in the U.S. The line to cross the border, both auto and pedestrian, at Tijuana/San Diego is usually hours long.

Now, 30 mi east....in Tecate, you just pay the guy in the little booth, with the jeans and badge on his blue shirt, a few bucks

Never mind the station wagon sittin' there with 20 rounds of machine gun holes
