50 Years Ago Today, It Came to the Theaters, (and scared the crap out of some).

I've been stung by jellyfish but not as bad as my late sister did one time.

We were frolicking around in rough surf and a wave broke over her and washed pieces of jellyfish down into her swimsuit.

She started screaming and I thought she had been bitten by a shark or something.

She pulled her suit down around her hips and started slapping at herself because she was really in pain. It was a real show.....

Got her wrapped in a beach towel and her suit off and the lifeguard gave us something to spray on her and said to scrape her skin with the edge of a credit card to help remove the stingers.

I saw it once and it had the affect on me, to stay out of the ocean.
Although I've been swimming in the ocean since, sharks are more in my mind than they might have been otherwise.

I think what "ruined" the movie for me was Richard Dreyfuss. I always thought he was an over-rated actor.
Seems no matter the movie, he always plays Richard Dreyfuss.

And the poor shark just wanted to enjoy a relaxing vacation in Amity, but keeps getting interrupted by loud tourists, exploding boats, and three guys cosplaying Moby Dick on a fishing trip from hell.

I guess I am strange because I don't consider Jaws a "horror" film. Yes, there are scary parts to the movie but I was drawn into the feel of the movie. I enjoyed the interaction of the characters and the atmosphere of the small New England town. I have watched the movie many times and it never gets old for me . I still laugh at the scene of the two old men who go to the dock and try to capture the shark with the chain and hooks. And I still get chills when Robert Shaw has his scene describing the events after the sinking of the Indianapolis.

There have been a few movies in my lifetime that are better than Jaws (Godfather 1 and 2 come to mind) but Jaws remains my favorite movie that came out in my lifetime (Casablanca is still my favorite though). I was in my teens when it came out so I was into all the pop culture references that occurred because of the movie.
I don't consider it a horror film either, in it's day Jaws was more of a thriller than horror film.

Over all I have a very similar view of the movie.
