600lb AI security robot is reducing crime in Missouri

This might start being a new trend. Making the public very aware that they are being watched. People might actually want this. You heard the girl say how much safer she felt walking out to her car from the gym late at night.? They make them look fun and fitting to the atmosphere so "he" becomes a welcome sight. See, I said "he" while typing this.

There are lot more for sale too. Look at how low some of the prices are? I bet they do become popular, at night especially.

Is something like this necessary though?

I'm reading that women are carrying weapons from pepper spray to tasers to handguns for protection at something like a 50 to 1 ratio compared to men. And there have been serious proposals of curfews for all males ranging from 9 pm to 6 am or even 6 pm to 7 am, allowed outside only to travel to and from manual labor jobs. I believe that the latter sentiment originated in the UK but spread like wildfire through social media.

I guess the endgame looks like something we've seen in fiction:

This robot is being used at a shopping center in Raytown, MO....a suburb on the SE side of Kansas City, Raytown has been notorious as a "high crime" area for decades. When we lived in the KC area, I seldom went to/through Raytown. If I did drive through there, I made sure that the windows were up, and the doors locked....as just stopping at a traffic light for a minute could be risky.

Surely a glimpse into the future.

In the UK it's best to assume you're on camera no matter where you go, CCTV is sort of a norm here.

People have those robot vacuums that move about the home, and I've no idea how many Alexa's have been sold, but a lot! People are becoming accustomed to using these kinds of tech, and this seems a logical extension. I mean, it's essentially a moving CCTV camera.

A news story I saw claimed there had been a 50% reduction in crime at that shopping center.

Still, ,the Brit in me says that if "women are carrying weapons from pepper spray to tasers to handguns for protection at something like a 50 to 1 ratio compared to men", then it's a sign of a very very, sick society.

The radical feminists in my country would be delighted about curfews for men during the night. Is this case I must declare that I am a woman. Problem solved :ROFLMAO:.

On the first of November this is possible because of a new law in Germany. You must declare this and after a period of three months it is valid.
If I had declared to be a woman on August 1, I'd be a woman on November 1. At least for one year. Not kidding!

What are my choices? Can I also declare that I'm a duck or a donkey. I'd love to have a real quack or an ee-or!

It’s interesting but sounds kind of gimmicky to me.

We have license plate readers in patrol cars, at the local mega mall, etc…

I’m sure the new ip address tracking feature will be challenged as an invasion of privacy.

The biggest advantage that I can see is the simple visibility of this robot.

A criminal will always have the advantage or element of surprise and this robot may make them think twice and pick a different location.

It takes very good pictures, and probably video. It will make it a lot easier to "catch a thief". :)

Actually those aren't needed any more.

Most makes of car now use TPMS sensors in each tire, and the radio burst these transmit can be picked up by roadside receivers that use 5G cellular transmission back to central sites. Since TPMS sensors broadcast a serial number the system profiles each new car very quickly.

These can be used to track and locate your vehicle as well as capture its speed and identity.

I think most determined to commit crimes are not afraid of their photo taken .... simply put many thought doorbell cameras would stop theft / porch pirates etc... all it did was give you photos of who has your stuff.
if mugged or attacked i am not going to feel better they got the photo if they could taze them and stopped until they are apprehended that would be good.

Okay, so I was curious. :D

Let's start with the robot itself. Apparently it costs $300K.

  • It has 360 degree sight at eye level at all times in HD.
  • Has a Security Call Button (I guess a panic button you can press).
  • It has Facial Recognition abilities.
  • Has live audio communication that is two way.
  • It can be used to broadcast messages.
  • It automatically detects movement around it.
  • It has Automatic Registration Number recognition.
  • It has thermal detection (for humans and for fires).
  • It can detect signals around it, such as used by Smartphones and read the IP address).
  • It has strobe lights.
  • It can detect both the range of an object, and use Sonar tech for navigation.
  • It's connection is 4G.
  • Can make it up a 20% incline.
  • Can work in temps up to 115F.
  • Uses a Chrome interface.
  • Provides for a live video feed.
  • Provides 30 days of video retention.
  • It seems to need two charges a day (of 15 minutes) in order to cover 24/7.

From what I've seen, this first had a trial on the New York Subway. While there it ran into legal challenges from the Legal Aid Society with reference to some of its capabilities (Face Recognition, and the ability to read IP addresses). After a three month trial it was withdrawn and, believe it or not, put away in a cupboard.

The mayor in New York announced that it "had a new assignment", so I wonder if they shipped their model to Bywater? I couldn't find that out, so speculation. The manufacturers make all kinds of claims around crime reduction. These are used in factories, apparent. It's an all weather monster.

Yep only have to sell this once to cities and then walk away as they now it will end up being shelved or used in simple security issues not tackling real crime or danger .... i wish the committee/ or person who OK'ed the expense had to find way to recoup funds of a fancy gadget put in a storage warehouse or closet.

Can I have one of them for my personal bodyguard?
It's not so long ago that no woman would go out without a sword-carrying gentleman at her side. Things haven't changed much!
Sad that it takes the threat of physical violence to make people behave themselves.
