75-year-old Author Salman Rushdie attacked on stage!

As long as there are any Muslims, we will never, ever be safe. Too many of them want to live by the rules of the 7th century AD.
Come on, I have worked in several Muslim countries, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, and Indonesia. Met worked with and was around a whole lot of Muslims, never met one who wanted "to live by the rules of the 7th century AD" or was threatening to me. Maybe the Saudi religious police came closest, but they left westerners alone, acted as though we weren't there.

They did not all conform with our Western sensibilities on everything, more their governments than the individuals I met, but threating to us, no.

And should have been trained to spring into action without that moment of hesitation you are I would have...

The attacker sounds like an amateur, and given that it was a knife attack you'd think the security guys should have done better... He stabbed Rushdie 10 times before he was stopped.
there's a video somewhere showing the security standing around for what seems like a long time, probably only about 45 seconds.. while the attacker lashed out over and over and did all the damage .. just appalling.. what a cheapskate security outfit it must have been...

Not threatening to us ? Oh ? Really ? You must have a very short memory. Tell that to the victims of 9/11. Tell that to the Israeli's.

Tell that to the victims of 9/11
Yes, the 9/11 attack perpetrators were Muslim, but the portion of the Muslim people involved was minuscule, not representative in any way.

And the Israeli conflict is complex, too much so to generalize about here, except to say that also does not involve a very large portion of the world's Muslims.

When I said "but threating to us, no" I was talking about my personal experience. Admittedly a small fraction of the world's Muslims but something of a cross section, I think.

As long as there are any Muslims, we will never, ever be safe. Too many of them want to live by the rules of the 7th century AD. They have been murdering innocent people since the beginning of time. No way to change them. All we can ever hope to do is to confine them to their own barbaric countries, and not allow them to travel to civilized nations.

White Christian terrorists...

When those "white Christian terrorists" start hijacking planes and flying them into buildings, Then I'll start worrying about them. Until then, they don't even begin to compare to Muslim terrorists.
In this country alone, White Christians (Evangelicals, Mainline Protestants and Catholics) should not throw stones. They have been involved in white terrorism (KKK) for more than 100 years beginning in December 1865. And molestation of children! And white supremacy! ... and, and so many other evils. Pervasive throughout the entire country! Religion overall has perpetrated a great deal of evilness on mankind.

I think Timothy McVeigh, Anders Breivik, Robert Bowers, Brenton Tarrant, and Patrick Crusius are just a few examples of the kind of white Christians we do need to worry about. I know all 5 were white, and believe all were Christian. Terrorists can come in any color or religious persuasion

You may not recognize some of those names, but look them up, they killed a lot of people for no reason but terrorism. Except for McVeigh and Breivik they don't seem to get the same media attention as the Muslim terrorists.

I wonder about the safety of the people in general who are on stage and are vulnerable to attacks. They really have no chance of help from the audience/security team. I think the reason might be at first there's a moment of shock from anyone, and it takes a moment or two just digesting the whole situation before anyone can spring to action. I know I would have been in shock at Rushdie's incident. Right now, the image of Will Smith's attack comes to mind. No one came to the other guy's assistance when Smith attacked him....hmmm...
There was an attack on a Rep. gubernatorial candidate (NY), also with a knife. Crazy thing is they detained the guy but then he was set free...WTH!! Sometime later he was arrested and charged.

When comedian Dave Chappelle was attacked while on stage, I heard his security beat the hell out of the guy before he could harm Dave. I think if you're on somebody's security team, you don't have time to be shocked. My husband was on Muhammad Ali's security team way back in the day. They are supposed to stay ready. @Alligatorob @hollydolly
Hey Rob, I guess @senior chef never read the Department of Homeland Security's report that White Supremacist domestic terrorists are this country's worst threat. I've read other similar articles from different venues but this is the first one I came across today.

I agree. I also worked with muslims in a previous job in Ohio. Very nice people, and we socialized and were very respectful of each other. As long as they didn't try to change my religion, I was fine. Edited - however, Greece (predominantly Christian country) lives next to a muslim country (Turkey) and if you look at Greece's history, the Greeks have had problems with Turkey for hundreds and hundreds of years. This is a real conflict.

That's amazing about your husband, @OneEyedDiva! That would make a great story! Just a thought....

Very true.. and having visited both Turkey & Greece several times, I've witnessed this first hand on a domestic level also...

Ok, you are right, that was the subject.

Do you think the Greek/Turk conflict today has much to do with religion, or would there still be tensions even if both sides were now of the same religion?
I think religion has a lot to do with it. We have a patriarch at Constantinople and the Orthodox Hagia Sophia cathedral that is located there has been turned into a mosque. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hagia_Sophia

I didn't know my husband back then; I didn't meet him until maybe 15 years later. And he never gave specific details when he talked about that time, only that he got to travel, stay at nice places and meet interesting people. He did tell me about a famous singer who had a serious crush on Ali though and would show up many times where he would be. My husband was very well known and well liked by most in the Islamic communities across several states. The only place we went where nobody knew him was Mexico. šŸ˜€ I do have some pictures of him (and a couple of my stepson) with Ali but there are other personal shots of Ali with his family that I'd seen early in our relationship but now don't know where they are.
