76 Year Old Lost Her Life Savings In A Romance Scam. Her Son Was No Help.

So true. It has been said that you never really know someone till money is involved. I think that is true most often.
 

This is like trying to use reason to understand a situation where reason wasn't used in the first place.
First of all, even if you thought you were going to invest $70,000 to buy a house together, you would want to see the house before you buy it.
Secondly, if you were buying a house with someone in a joint ownership deed, it requires that you both show your ID to prove who you are.
To just send your life savings to someone you've never met who says they will handle everything, to buy a house you've never seen, is mind blowing. It's hard to understand how anyone could live to that age and not use common sense, but apparently it is possible. My heart goes out to her anyway. I hope somewhere along the line this con man gets what he deserves.

I agree, Bobcat... it goes beyond understanding. If some stranger finds me on the 'Net among a hundred bajillion other people and claims to "love me"... well then send *ME* presents! Don't ask me for money... send me diamonds and gold... and chocolate 🤭 if you "love" a complete stranger so much.

But... with everything we've all heard for years about these scams, I'm thinking there *is* no way to get through to the people who are going to lose everything by their own [foolish] decisions. 😟 @bobcat
 

My heart goes out to this woman also.
It’s easy for others to see how foolish this is but some people truly will do anything for the promise of love. L♥️VE trumps every emotion and these catfish play on these women’s emotions. They probably know who are the most naive & gullible right from the start and maybe spend more time with them.

This is similar to an addiction. The children often desperately try to talk sense into them but they believe this fairy tale so much. The disparity these women must feel must be unimaginable. Like Della pointed out, Dr. Phil had many catfish shows and it was shocking how many catfish were caught red handed and some of the women still go back to them.
This is even after the person in the picture shows up on the show proving it’s not really them. These scammers steal photos online and use them to bait with.

It’s very sad. Many of these women who’ve had a house and a good retirement fund end up homeless. These weren’t unintelligent women.
 
Having dementia I wouldn’t categorize as ‘foolish.’ Maybe they have a serious mental disorder or an undiagnosed brain tumour.
We don’t know. It is easy to judge though.
