9 Dead Over Dozen Missing In Rave Club Fire In Oakland

I was supposed to drive down to Oakland this morning to pick up a lady whose son is in Oakland Children`s Hospital. She needs to come home and "sterilize" her house so she can bring him home. Turns out another volunteer offered to bring her home and I will drive her back there tomorrow. No idea if the fire was nearby but I was glad I didn`t have to go today.

I just saw pictures on a tv screen/news which shows the scope & ominous nature of the fire much better than a computer. They're now saying up to 40 dead. They showed yellow tarps over bodies-don't know if they've been counted yet. The building also has one side built at an odd angle. Looks like it was added on over the years. I'm trying to think what could've burnt that fast & furious in an 'empty' warehouse besides wood pallets or spray painted walls with lacquer in the paint. Sad

Speedy recovery to survivors

Yeah,it sounded like artists did their work in there. I was afraid there were going to be way more deaths than the 9 they were reporting this morning. 25 were unaccounted for at that point and how do they even know who all was in there? Sad.

What a tragedy. It looks like it went up like a torch, never saw anything like that. No wonder they couldn't get out.

So very sad when this sort of thing happens. First thought was The Station fire in Rhode Island some years ago. A space not up on fire codes and one errant spark set off the whole building. There too most of the dead and injured were pitifully young. Prayers to all affected.

It be a pretty safe bet there were 'homeless' living in there since someone was known to leased or rented space to live. But there were also a lot of arteeests. They were chasing a dream and probably lived in or were in just as many dangerous situations as the warehouse. Sad because apparently it was home to many and a gathering spot for a community living and doing what they wanted.

PEACE

I saw the warehouse fire story but didn't realize it was a rave full of young people. Death toll now at 33. Teenage lives snuffed out too soon. :(

If it was just a rave location I don't think it would have been as bad. It's being reported on as a living/work space although it's only zoned as a warehouse. Apparently a tenant or the lease signer was known to have rented space out and the RVs parked in the warehouse were also rented out for living. I posted a link with pre fire pictures. It was set up more like an antique shop with a lot of old flammable stuff.

Reports also have the fire mostly on the second floor and shaky staircase with no railings. Some say it was pile of wood pallets.

How do these "raves" come to be? Are they sort of spontaneous, or does someone organize them and invite people or put out the word or whatever? Did the owner rent the space to them for the rave?

Besides word of mouth my guess many use social media to spread the word. This place almost sounds like a place where one might have an art exhibition or something. It's too small for dance club type rave. They say people trying to break into music or art love this place and area. Almost sounds like a club, not a dance club but 'a club'.

So wouldn't the owners of such a building have an obligation to make it safe for its purpose, whatever that might be? I wouldn't want to be one of the owners of that place right now!

The building code for living space vs work space are apparently different although one would think there should be a fire sprinkler system in a commercial building period. Apparently this place has held events before. Many are blaming the event promoter. Apparently the city had try to get in there as late as November 13 after reports of inside/unpermitted construction but the building was locked up.

Reports say refrigerator might have caused the fire. Flames seen coming out of one/witness and signs of an angle fire on wall. Death toll upto the 36. Also victims were trying to send one last message or make one last call per cell phone evidence. There also might be some video evidence on them as well.

And people aren't even buried yet and the tragedy is being politicized. The mayor shouted down at vigil.

Well, IMHO, the fault lies clearly with the owner of the building for not keeping it up to code, and with the promoter of the event, who knew or should have known that the place was a deathtrap. And with the City for not inspecting an apparently clearly substandard building. Just my opinion.
