I have just joined this site and am looking forward to some good communication with you folks. My wife and I retired 12 years ago and bought a cattle ranch, and my, how time flies by. Our herd is doing great and the ranch work has evolved into cruise control mode. We work pretty much seven days a week but contrary to popular belief, ranch work is not overly physically demanding...just real steady. My wife is very actively involved in craft work such as quilting, sewing, embroidering, etc. so this is where she spends a lot of her spare time. I ride my motorcycle road bikes and dirt bike all over the country. And, I play racquetball in the Senior Games, formerly known as the "Senior Olympics." Our nearest neighbors are miles away and our nearest little town of 400 folks is 10 miles from the ranch. All in all it has been a wonderful retirement.

Hello from Down Under, interesting that you bought a ranch in retirement, How big is your cattle ranch? I wonder what you did before.

Welcome to the forum Agman, from London England, sounds like you have an Idyllic life out there on your Texan Ranch ..may you continue to enjoy it..We have another member here on the forum from Texas...I expect you probably know each other . .. ...;)

I'm joking....of course.. :D

Thanks, folks, for the welcomes to the forum. With the shorter days of late fall and winter, I find myself spending more time on the computer and look forward to some great communication with all of you.

Fern, in Texas vernacular, our ranch is a "little piss ant" place of only 50 acres. We run about 15 Mama Cows using artificial insemination and normally have a very high pregnancy rate close to 100%. We didn't get into ranching in order to increase our income but rather to keep our butts off the couch and stay as busy as possible. Plus, my wife and I love the outdoors and all kinds of animals. We've built perimeter and cross fencing, stock tanks (ponds), barns, corrals, huge gardens, a craft house for my bride, and countless other projects. I was a corporate guy with GE in my career and my wife spent over 40 years with the government. Neither of us can imagine what it would be like living in big towns like Dallas, Houston, Austin, or San Antonio. In many ways our retirement has become a dream come true.

Welcome to the forum Agman, and kudos to your 'ambitious' retirement life. Hope it all works out well.
My oldest daughter and SIL have country acreage out near Waco, amongst some large ranchers and love the open spaces.
I understand the love of country living.

My childhood was life on a farm, and it was non-stop work for all involved. I just can't imagine that kind of life today.
I live on the outskirts of Houston, where people all around me have horses, goats, chickens, etc. .. mostly on 2 or 3 acres.
Me, I'm bogged down with two dogs and a cat..:D .. I'm a widow living alone.
And although I've toyed with getting a chicken coop and a few chickens, or maybe some rabbits, it hasn't happened so far.
Grandkids really want those rabbits.... I just think of all the work involved with a small project like that ..:worked_till_5am:

Bonnie, our ranch is only about 75 miles West of Waco and we go there about once a month. Regarding your living near Houston, my wife and I each went to the University of Houston eons ago and remain loyal alums. We run about 25 chicken hens and a rooster and I would strongly recommend that you pick up a few for your flock. Nothing like hearing a rooster crow early in the morning! Thanks for your welcome.

Thanks, but I'll pass. lol ... laying hens would at least have a purpose ...:playful: .. I have to be practical Ag.

On another note , as alum, are you watching Tom Herman do his magic at U of H this year?

Lordy! Does my old heart good seeing how well the Cougars are doing this year! The next couple of games will definitely define their season. Tom Herman has made a fantastic start whatever the outcome, though.
