I'm happy to know I will have 5 years breathing space after this Mrs. Robinson. John has to pass his in Dec and I am due in Jan so I imagine we'll go down at the same time and face the music. I hope he passes the eye test. He's diabetic but I think he'll pass ok. I have got to man up ("woman up"?) and start reading that darn booklet!!!

Linda-My husband went online and took many of the tests to prepare. Still missed one too many anyway and had to wait 5 minutes and retake the test,which he passed.

Yes, some things that are tearfully boring to read, we can ignore and discard;
However, some we simply must plug away at, and that one is one of those.

I hope you surprisingly find something in it, that is either new and interesting,
or previously unknown in all our years of driving alright,

or preferably, something very funny, that you and spouse can have a good laugh over!

Let us know how long it takes to get through that, or how many seperate sessions.

One thing my husband did mention is that they asked several questions regarding child safety seats. Like how much they have to weigh and how tall they have to be for the different types of seats-or no longer need them. Important questions,sure,but not for most of us seniors. Yes,we do have our grandkids in our car at times,but we depend on our kids to know what they need and install them for us lol.

Today while I was waiting for my husband to get his MRI I opened up the DMV app on my phone and did 3 tests on there. I got a 72 which is failing but without reading the booklet yet I guess I did OK. I know there is an app for all states so anyone interested can download the practice tests for your state. Now that I know how poorly I did on the tests I'm going to start reading the book tomorrow.

That definitely provides real motivation, for reading the boring manual!

It was a good idea to try the practice tests, and to take those first steps toward getting that testing behind you.

Btw, now that you will need to learn about child car seats, I wonder if the next time grandchildren arrive, will you measure their heights and weights, and tell your children to replace the car seats? Or tell your adult children you are not taking the grands someplace, because they have grown an inch taller?

Also, if you ask me to take your grands someplace for an hour, I would need to say, wait, first I need to measure their heights, and weigh them, etc, before I say yes or no.

It is probably a good idea for more drivers to be aware of, but my funny bone kicks in.

I had to study that DMV booklet a year ago. I downloaded it as a PDF file. The questions with numbers were the hardest ones for me to remember. So I went through the whole thing and highlighted every number in yellow. It worked, I didn't miss any questions on the test. Now I'm good for another 4 years til I have to do it all over again.

I suspect the test requirement for seniors is really a screen for senility. Be sure to make an appointment well in advance. Mine was about a month out.

I did wonder if they do this, in order to test if the "seniors" are confused,
or if they do it because laws and rules change, and because they want all drivers to be aware of current signs and changes.

I'm sure they want to make sure we all know the laws, but before I turned 75 I went many years without requiring a written test. I just mailed in the money and got a renewal. They have the option of requiring a driving test if they think you are not capable for some reason.

I also think this written test it to weed out anyone who might have dementia.

To answer your question Kaila, none of my grandchildren are young so I don't have to worry about car seats and I'm sure glad I don't. Our youngest is 12 and lives in Europe. The other 4 are from 25 to almost 31. There are 3 great grands but they live so far away I haven't seen them yet.
