Crowd-sourced insanity.
Like any mob the original idea of one person might be right, but let the snow-ball start rolling and it loses all similarity to that idea. It becomes an organic thing, in and of itself.
Remember also that China's Internet is relatively isolated - with few exceptions we cannot access it, just as the Chinese population cannot easily access the rest of the "real" 'Net. That makes for a closed-loop system, a "coliseum" of sorts, wherein only the strong will survive.
... actually, that sounds like OUR Internet as well ...
