I can’t even count the number of times I was called to a residence for suspicion of child abuse or endangerment. I have seen some very sad situations. I asked one little boy when was the last time he ate. He was 8 y/o and he told me he ate that afternoon. I asked him what did he have to eat. He said “juice.” I asked him again when was the last time he ate food, like a hamburger or hot dog or vegetables. He answered “I don’t know.”
The 8 y/o boy was with his 2 little sisters. They were all dirty and the 2 y/o looked like her diaper wasn’t changed all day. She was crying for Mommy and mommy was inside the house drinking a glass of water. She was wearing some type of raggedy looking dress. Just like the Officer in the video, we arrested Mommy for child neglect and took them all to the hospital for checkups. The mother said she didn’t want any doctor checking her and I told her she would be asked to sign a form claiming A.D.A. or Against Doctor’s Advice.
The house was filthy and also we may not have seen any cockroaches, but we did see bed bugs and the house had a foul odor inside. They were using old newspapers to wipe themselves. We didn’t see one can of food and there was no milk in the refrigerator. I asked her how was she paying the rent and she told me her cousin allowed her to stay in the mobile home for free.
It was probably the worst case scenario I saw. She kept telling us she didn’t have any money to buy food or diapers and her husband just up and left one day. I asked her if she knew there was help available and she told me she didn’t know who to call. I reminded her a good place to call would have been 911 and they would have directed her to the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. From there, she would have been put in contact with the County’s welfare office.
